“Elected officials serve the people of New Jersey. The findings of the independent investigation released yesterday are serious, troubling, and unacceptable. As the County Chairs representing New Jersey’s Democratic Party, we are grateful that Lieutenant Governor Caldwell is stepping aside and putting the interests of the people first.

“Governor Sherrill’s decision to launch an independent investigation was the right course, and we applaud her for it. The governor put the people of New Jersey first, ahead of politics, and allowed the independent investigation to proceed unimpeded so that the facts could be reviewed impartially and thoroughly. Governor Sherrill always promised transparency and accountability in government, and it was exemplified in these difficult circumstances.”

“Now it is time to move forward together and return to the business of delivering for all New Jerseyans.”

We’re keeping a close watch on this coastal storm as it moves through our region.

Coastal flooding remains our biggest concern, with multiple rounds of tidal flooding possible through the weekend. Strong winds, high surf, dangerous rip currents, and beach erosion are also expected to continue.

Please follow official alerts and stay aware of conditions in your area. If you live in a flood-prone community, take steps now to prepare – and never drive through a flooded road.

A new report is raising questions about whether ICE is already using its Roxbury warehouse to hold detainees, despite a May court order restricting its conversion into a detention facility.
Dover Councilwoman Sandra Wittner says she witnessed vehicles associated with ICE arrests in Dover on September 4 travel directly to the Roxbury site. According to Wittner, the same vehicles seen in Dover entered the warehouse property roughly 30 minutes to an hour later. She also received a call from a family reporting that their father had been taken to a warehouse.
“I said, ‘That’s not legal,’” Wittner recalled. “I knew that detainees cannot be held inside Roxbury.”
Wittner said the man was reportedly held there for only a few hours, but was not the only detainee brought to the site. One detainee also reportedly described work being done on bathrooms while people were inside—potentially raising additional questions about compliance with the May court order.
The allegations have been referred to the New Jersey Attorney General. The AG’s office said that any attempt to convert the Roxbury warehouse into a detention center would violate the existing court order and that it is reviewing reports of activity at the property for possible noncompliance.
Wittner and immigrant advocacy group Project NINJA are now calling on members of Congress to inspect the facility and determine exactly what ICE is doing inside.
