Read this message from Jerrod Weems- if you have time today- call your school board member and tell them to vote for this!!
In October, I made a motion to add a vote to this meeting’s agenda on whether our school board meetings should be recorded. This is something we discussed extensively at the school board retreat, recognizing the need for transparency and community engagement in our district. Tonight’s meeting will be held at Central Office at 6pm.
Here are the reasons why recording our meetings is essential:
1. Accessibility for All: Not everyone can attend school board meetings due to work, family commitments, or health concerns. By recording and sharing these meetings, we ensure that everyone has the chance to be informed, regardless of their schedule.
2. Accountability: Recorded meetings foster accountability among board members and district leaders, as it provides a clear, unaltered record of discussions and decisions. It’s a way to ensure our actions align with our commitments to the community.
3. Transparency: Schools are a public institution, and our community deserves to know how decisions are made. Recordings allow everyone to see firsthand how we handle issues, deliberate policies, and plan for the future.
4. Educational Tool: For students, teachers, and aspiring leaders, these recordings serve as a valuable learning resource on civic engagement, decision-making, and the workings of local government.
5. Historical Record: Recorded meetings create an archive of our school board’s history, allowing future board members, administrators, and community members to review past decisions, discussions, and rationales. This continuity helps ensure well-informed decisions and a sense of progress over time.
6. Improved Communication: By recording meetings, we can reduce misunderstandings and misinformation. Community members can hear discussions and decisions directly, minimizing secondhand information and fostering clarity on complex topics.
7. Encouraging Community Involvement: Recording meetings can make it easier for community members to engage with issues that matter to them. People can catch up on past meetings and provide feedback, which strengthens our connection to the community’s voice.
8. Building Trust with Families: Parents want to know how issues affecting their children are handled. When they can see and hear our conversations about safety, curriculum, resources, and policies, it strengthens their confidence in our commitment to students’ success.
9. Supporting Equity: By making meetings accessible to everyone, regardless of physical attendance, we’re promoting equity in community participation. It helps ensure every family, including those from marginalized or underserved communities, can stay informed and participate in the dialogue about their schools.
10. Enhancing Board Member Accountability: Recording meetings can encourage board members to be more thoughtful and thorough in their decision-making. When discussions are recorded, it’s easier for the public to follow each member’s contributions and commitment to the district’s goals.
11. Promoting Informed Voting: Recordings can help voters make informed decisions by allowing them to understand each board member’s views and contributions. This fosters a more educated electorate that is engaged with local governance.
12. Showing Respect for Public Interest: When we record our meetings, it’s a sign of respect for our community’s interest in school matters. It says we value your attention, we want to keep you informed, and we welcome your participation in making our schools the best they can be.
Recording our school board meetings would make a clear statement: we value transparency, accountability, and the participation of every voice in our district. Together, let’s keep building a stronger, more informed community!
