Morristown-Hamblen Emergency Medical Service

Morristown-Hamblen Emergency Medical Service The official page for Morristown-Hamblen EMS. Over half our Paramedics are trained at the highest level achievable in the state, Critical Care Paramedic.

In 1955 the Morristown Rescue Squad was established with a handful of local volunteers, driven by a need to provide emergency service to the residents of Hamblen County. In 1984, Morristown-Hamblen Emergency Medical Service was established when the State of Tennessee made it mandatory to have at least one Emergency Medical Technician on a high percentage of the calls ran in a specific county/area.

In 1985, Morristown-Hamblen Emergency Medical Service was granted a full license to practice and became incorporated. We have evolved from having one ambulance with a basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a volunteer driver, responding to 30-40 calls per month to having at least an EMT-IV and Paramedic, 6 ambulances, and responding to approximately one thousand calls per month. In today’s ever changing world of pre-hospital treatment, MHEMS is constantly meeting and exceeding the standard and perpetually striving to rival our best. Morristown-Hamblen EMS has been acknowledged by our peers throughout the state by being awarded the Star of Life award four years in a row, and many other significant awards. All of our EMT-IV’s and Paramedics are trained in CPR, Pre-hospital Pediatric Emergency Provider’s course, Emergency Vehicles Operators Course, Emergency Pediatric Care and Vehicle Extrication. In addition to the above training, all of our Paramedics are trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Rapid Sequence Intubation, and Advanced Medical Life Support. Due to the amount of training our employees go through, we are able to offer every service available to ground ambulances. Our Paramedics can apply advanced interventions including:

Our Paramedics can perform Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI)- Chemically paralyzing a patient and putting in a tube for a patient that is in severe respiratory distress or unable to protect their own airway. Surgical and Needle Cricothyrotomy- A surgical intervention sometimes necessary in choking victims, or when other means of establishing a patient's airway are unfeasible/impossible. The State of Tennessee requires our paramedics be trained on this procedure once every 6 months. CPAP: This procedure allows us to use positive pressure to assist our patients who are experiencing severe shortness of breath. Patient Resuscitator/Ventilator: This is an oxygen driven ventilation for patients that have a breathing tube placed by a Paramedic.
12 lead transmission: During a heart attack, “time is muscle”. Our Paramedics are trained in the rapid recognition and treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Last week we celebrated EMS week and we showcased our different shifts, so we did not have a First Responder Friday.

This week we are back with another First Responder Friday to introduce you all to another one of our team members.

We would like to introduce you all to Dakota. If you have been following us for a bit, Dakota was in one of our recent EMT classes and liked all of us enough to stick around!

Check out his 'About Me' page and if you see Dakota out on a call, make sure to say hello!

When our Morristown-Hamblen Library staff is not helping you find a book, apply for a library card, or ensuring you keep your voices down (because you're in the library of course) they are out learning some skills from us here at MHEMS.

Yesterday, several members from the library staff came and trained for CPR, Choking Emergencies and Narcan administration.

We enjoyed having them come train with us, and we hope that they left us with some new knowledge!

Recently we had some of our personnel invited to the 2026 Dolly Parton Children's Hospital Excellence in EMS Awards Banquet.

These individuals were honored for their service to the community and the patients lives in which they saved on the respective dates of these calls.

Both of the patients from these calls were in cardiac arrest and our crews successfully performed life saving measures resulting in these patients walking out of the hospital after receiving necessary care and returning home to their families.

We are proud to have these individuals on our team and we thank them for all that they do.

The following individuals were honored and received awards:

Azlynn Ross- Paramedic
Chris Lykens- AEMT
Captain, Abigail Anderson- Paramedic
