We are experiencing some rough weather tonight. With great rains and winds, comes great driving responsibilities. Slow down and give yourself extra time. Especially between you and the vehicle in front of you, and when going around turns. Hazards like downed trees and other roadway debris will be harder to see from a distance and the wet roads will be harder to stop on.

Seen here are the remnants of a tree that fell blocking the entire roadway. An officer happened upon it and was able to clear the road. A special thanks to the nearby resident who saw this and came back with a broom for the officer and shovel to help remove the finer pieces from the roadway.

The Morristown Police Department has received two reports of fraudulent listings of houses for rent this past week.

One of these incidents stemmed from a listing on Zillow.com for a house for rent in Johnson, Vermont. The other was a Facebook Marketplace post for a house for rent in Morristown, Vermont.

In both incidents, the victims sent money to fake rental companies as part of an application fee or rental deposit. Also, both were requested to send certain personal information that the fake companies said was for background checks to secure the rental.

If you're in the market for a rental, be sure you're speaking with someone local, or a real rental company. Also, watch for red flags such as only communicating online or by text, requesting payments via a payment method that offers no protections for the payee, aggressive tactics trying to force you to provide money or personal information before being allowed to speak with someone on the phone or before you're allowed see the property.

If you've given out banking information, credit card numbers, your address or your social security number, you should call your bank and/or credit card company, make them aware, and follow their process for protecting you. You can also reach out to the major credit bureaus to place a credit freeze and fraud alerts on your information.

Yesterday, Officer Werth and Officer Hannon visited a local summer camp in Morristown. The officers met with the kids and held a questions and answers session with them, answering questions about being a police officer.

Everyone then went outside where Officer Werth brought out K9 Knox and allowed the kids to pet him and performed a demonstration of his tracking skills. Officer Hannon then brought out the department drone and demonstrated its functionality, allowing each kid to see the screen to see the different camera modes.

The kids were then given a chance to check out the police cruisers and ask additional questions about our gear and the job we do.
