Join a State Park Interpreter for a guided 1-mile walk on Friday, May 15 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve.

Together, we’ll discover how Coast Live Oaks are more than just trees - they’re the foundation of an entire ecosystem. From lichens and insects, to birds, plants, and mammals, these oaks support a rich network of life. Along the way, we’ll learn how these relationships work and why they matter.

Meet at the parking lot for Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve. Wear comfortable shoes and long pants, as poison oak is an important species of the oak woodland community.

Join a State Park Interpreter in exploring tidepools while participating in a community science project called Sea Slug Search to document sea slugs in this area and assist researchers in tracking sea slugs!

We will meet at the Hazard Reef Trailhead parking area (35.285364, -120.880877) in Montaña de Oro State Park at 8am on Wednesday, May 6. Tip: type the coordinates into your map app of choice to find the meeting location.

Please be sure to download the iNaturalist classic app and create an account before the event, if you do not already have one.

Come prepared for coastal weather and wear layers and non-slip shoes that can get wet. Make sure to bring a water, sunscreen, and any snacks you may need.

Note, we will walk approximately 0.5 miles on a trail with steep steps and a creek crossing from the parking lot to the tidepools. We will also walk on this trail back to the parking lot following the tidepooling activity.

All ages are welcome to attend this free event, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Visit the Interpretive Events Calendar link in our bio for more information and events!

Rain or stormy weather will cancel this event.

It’s nesting season for great egrets (and great blue herons) at Morro Bay State Park! 🪺❤️

Keep an eye out for these long-legged birds gathering in tall trees like eucalyptus and Monterey cypress near the water. During breeding season, these birds grow delicate, lacy plumes on their backs—used in eye catching courtship displays to attract a mate. Once paired, they form a monogamous bond for the season.

There’s a deeper story behind those beautiful feathers: in the late 1800s and early 1900s, plume hunting for the fashion industry reduced great egret populations in North America by as much as 95%. Protection laws helped them recover and today we’re fortunate to see them thriving once again along our coast.

When it comes to nesting, males choose the site and begin building, sometimes waiting to finish until they’ve impressed a mate. These large birds (with wingspans up to 5.5ft!) construct equally impressive nests— up to 3 ft wide and 1ft deep.

If you visit, remember to observe from a distance and keep nesting birds safe.

Do you enjoy kayaking or stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and connecting with others about the environment and nature? 🛶🌊

If so, you may be a good fit for our SeaLife Steward volunteer program!

SeaLife Stewards are volunteer interpreters who paddle the waters of Morro Bay from Friday-Sunday during the summer months, engaging with visitors to promote responsible recreation and respectful wildlife viewing. This is a unique opportunity to spend time on the water and inspire others!

📆Applications are due by April 7!
