Georgia Archives

Georgia Archives The Georgia Archives identifies and preserves Georgia's most valuable historical documents.

The Georgia Archivesโ€™ collections include the founding documents of the state, such as the Royal Charter that created the colony of Georgia in 1733 and the Ratification of the United States Constitution, the 1788 document that made Georgia a state. Important collections include the official records of Governors, from the Journal of Georgiaโ€™s first Royal Governor in 1754 to the records of the curre

nt Governor. Acts of the General Assembly also span from the acts of the first Assembly in 1755 to the present. Other collections include records of interest to genealogists, land surveyors, state and local government officials, teachers, and students.

Thank you to the Georgia State Society Daughters of the American Revolution for their recent donation of genealogical records to the Georgia Archives.

For many years, Georgia Society DAR members have collected and preserved original genealogical records, including family Bible records, journals, cemetery inventories, and other materials that may not be available in published books or online databases. Bound copies of these volumes have been donated to the Georgia Archives library, where they can be found in our Reference Library.

We appreciate Georgia Society DARโ€™s continued work to preserve family history and make these records more accessible to researchers.

On Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on service, sacrifice, and remembrance.

Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day honors members of the United States Armed Forces who lost their lives in service to the country.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Today, Americans continue to mark the day through ceremonies, visits to cemeteries and memorials, and acts of remembrance.

The Georgia Archives preserves records that help document the lives and service of Georgians who served during times of war. In the Virtual Vault, the World War I Casualties Scrapbooks include records of Georgians who died or were wounded during the Great War, including those who died from battle wounds, illness, or other wartime circumstances.

The Georgia Archives online exhibit โ€œWorld War I in Their Wordsโ€ also shares letters and primary documents from Georgians who lived through World War I, offering a closer look at the experiences of soldiers and families during the war.

Because the Georgia Archives holds many state and local government records, it helps to think about how a person, family, organization, or community may have interacted with government.

Did they pay taxes? Buy land? Appear in court? Serve in the military? Work with a state agency? Live near changing county lines?

Each record type can offer a different clue. One may show where someone lived. Another may point to property, legal matters, public service, family connections, or community ties.

Your next clue may be in a record you havenโ€™t tried yet. Plan your visit: https://www.georgiaarchives.org/visit.
