Morton Depot Visitor Center

Morton Depot Visitor Center The Morton Depot Visitor Center is open to everyone looking for information on the surrounding area The depot exterior restoration project is completed.

The Visitor Center is part of the Cowlitz River Valley Historical Society complex. Relocation and restoration of the Morton Depot has been a 20 year dream of the Historical Society. Built in 1910, the two story frame building is one of the last of this type of Milwaukee stations in existence today. The advent of the train opened the area to commerce and economic prosperity as well as travel. The d

epot looks like it did in 1910. The return of the Trains and the Restoration of the Depot encourages the business development as the traffic increases. Although Grants have been obtained, matching funds are required. The Morton Depot is owned by the Cowlitz River Valley Historical Society (501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation) and is eligible for the Historic Registry.

Join the Cowlitz River Valley Historic Society meeting on Saturday morning, October 6 at 10 am at the Interpretive Center, 194 Main Avenue in Morton and help preserve local history! This 1880 Chickering rosewood, square grand piano, one of the many treasures at the center, was made in Boston for the lounge of a sailing ship. 100 years later, the piano was rescued by George Spurlock who traveled to Seattle in a horse-drawn wagon from his log cabin home in Alder to purchase the piano for his wife, Emma, after the learned that ship was going to be dismantled. Since the wagon trail ended several miles from his home, friends and neighbors carried the piano the rest of the way. Photo courtesy of East County Journal
