For the nation’s 250th anniversary, this series shares Morton connected stories drawn from local histories and archives, highlighting the lives and service of community members.

Dozens of men from the Morton area served in the Union forces during the Civil War; 19 are known to have died in service—7 killed in action and 12 from disease or other causes.

Civil War veteran Christian May (1834-1912) returned to the Morton area in 1863 after losing his arm during the Battle of Chancellorsville. He held many notable positions in the community following his return. From 1870-1885 he served as Postmaster, running the post office out of his home at 205 West Jefferson, the current location of Eli's Coffee Shop.
