Here is your seismic activity report for May 2026. 20 events were recorded in the USGS Comprehensive Catalog. A few small events occurred in north Idaho, near Moscow and Athol - these are attributed to explosions related to mining or construction.

The Idaho Geological Survey hosted a delegation from Kazakhstan, including visitors from their geological survey, in the IGS Boise Office. Topics of mutual interest included funding, Survey programs, and mining and critical minerals. Dr. Gillerman (middle) provided an economic geology perspective and State Geologist, Dr. Claudio Berti, joined in by Zoom for the lively discussion on what we do for Idaho. It was fun!

Annnnd we're back. After a few-month delay due to operational changes, Idaho earthquakes are again being reported to the USGS comprehensive catalog. Very big thanks to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology for continuing to locate and report earthquake events.

Did ya feel this one at 8:51 AM Mtn time? This was centered around Claton, ID. We are waiting on the official location and magnitude from the professional Seismologists and will report the details as soon as we have them.

IDAHO MONTHLY SEISMICITY REPORT

January was another relatively quiet month for earthquakes: only 11 recorded in the USGS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat), well below the median of ~80 earthquakes/month we have seen over the past 5 years. The past 3 months have seen fewer than normal numbers of earthquakes. Are we seeing an actual slow down in seismic activity? Or is something else going on? In this case, it is the result of how earthquakes are located and added to the ComCat. Earthquakes, especially smaller magnitude events, must be manual "picked" from seismograms by a seismologist. Recent staffing changes have impacted the ability of some regional networks to pick and submit earthquakes.
