Earlier this evening, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office in locating a wanted individual at Lowe’s in Decatur.

When law enforcement officers made contact with the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

A Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. The deputy’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The suspect sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting, an outside agency has been requested to conduct an independent investigation.

No further information is available at this time. Additional details will be released as they become available.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the renewal of our ALS1 (Advanced Life Support Level 1) license through the Alabama State Board of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services.
This certification reflects our continued commitment to providing advanced emergency medical care during critical incidents and rescue operations throughout Lawrence County.
The importance of this capability was demonstrated during the September 2025 rescue operation in Bankhead National Forest involving a venomous snake bite victim near the “Big Tree.” Members of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Team were able to provide advanced medical care on scene, including initiating IV access and administering medications while deep in difficult terrain prior to the patient being safely extricated and transported for further treatment.
Maintaining ALS capabilities within the Sheriff’s Office allows our deputies and SAR personnel to provide immediate life-saving interventions during emergencies where time and access to traditional medical response may be limited.
“I appreciate the dedication of my Deputies and all members of the SAR Team who continue to train and serve at a high level, and we thank our partnering agencies for their continued support in emergency response operations throughout Lawrence County.” Max Sanders

Today, we were glad to stop by a local lemonade stand, support some great kids, and enjoy a reminder of what community is all about. Moments like these show the importance of building relationships and being present for the people we serve each day.

“We appreciate the trust our community places in us and look forward to continuing to serve with respect, compassion, and care.”

Thompson Creek Search – Successful Rescue

Sheriff Sanders would like to commend the outstanding efforts of all agencies and volunteers involved in today’s search and rescue operation.

This morning, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Multi-Agency Search and Rescue team was activated in response to a missing party of three hikers who failed to return from Thompson Creek after hiking yesterday. Family members reported receiving a text message last night from one of the individuals stating they were lost and in need of assistance.

Search teams began operations at approximately 9:30 a.m., deploying from multiple entry points along the Thompson Creek trail system. At approximately 11:30 a.m., one of the teams successfully located all three individuals. Fortunately, they were uninjured and were safely escorted back to the incident command area, where they were reunited with their families.

Sheriff Sanders extends his sincere appreciation to every agency and volunteer who assisted in this effort. This operation is a true example of the strength of multi-agency cooperation, and these missions would not be possible without the dedication of these men and women.
