When the Mound City Preservation Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission, Inc. visited the Caretaker's Lodge a little over a week ago, we made an effort to photograph the murals painted by the very talented Jesse Wright. Today we give thanks to Mr. Wright for his work. One represents the Mound City Hospital, the Red Rover hospital boat, and the Ironclad gunboats, treating the wounded and the removal of the dead. Sitting on a horse observing the scene is U.S. Grant. Inside the entry is the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial. Jesse says he loved the monument in the center of the cemetery and it was a perfect fit for the space. The map features the Ohio River Scenic Byway Illinois, with Commission President and Treasurer Tom and Becky Mueller studying its details.

The Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission is serving as a consulting party on renovation work now underway at the 1885 Caretaker’s Lodge. As some of you know, we expressed outrage after learning that linoleum had been glued to the original floor.

During a walkthrough today, we learned that the linoleum is a temporary solution following a serious problem with an upstairs furnace. A clogged condensation drain caused a leak that warped a section of the wood floor. That issue, combined with other flooring problems, resulted in the decision to go with the vinyl flooring.

The good news is that we were told the wood floors will be restored to their original appearance, eventually. In the meantime, the commission will be involved in future decisions concerning the lodge and the remaining renovation work. Today we saw that a considerable amount of work remained.

We're also happy to see the windows in the Caretaker's Lodge restored and installed. They look terrific.

The Mound City National Cemetery Caretaker's Lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places. Interior alterations are not necessarily restricted by this designation. However, covering original wood flooring like this seems unwise and wasteful.

Stay tuned for more about the work being done on the Caretaker's Lodge.

Happy birthday America! You were born because they wanted a better life, a safer place to raise their children, you persevered through virgin forests, mountains of solid rock, and illness. You took all the best things from where you came...knowledge, arts, science, and created, innovated, and built. You fought for yourselves, your homes and lifestyle, beliefs, and to make men free. Then you fought for others from whence you came to do the same. America, you're not perfect but you're strong, you're resilient, and we appreciate you and those that built this land that I love! So Happy 250th America! We love you and honor all those who helped get you here along the way. ❤️🇺🇲💙
