Recently, there have been two scam attempts circulating that appear to originate from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office main telephone number, (304) 843-1500.

In the first reported scam, the caller instructs the recipient to leave their home immediately. In the second scam, the caller informs the recipient that they must authenticate a signature on a court document.

These calls are fraudulent and are not being made by the Marshall County Sheriff's Office. Scammers are able to manipulate caller ID information, making it appear as though calls are coming from legitimate telephone numbers, including those belonging to law enforcement agencies.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office will never contact individuals by telephone to demand immediate action, request payment, threaten arrest, or require personal information to resolve legal matters. If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office, do not provide any personal or financial information and do not follow any instructions given by the caller.

If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact the Marshall County Sheriff's Office directly at (304) 843-1500 to verify the information. Residents who believe they have been the victim of a scam or have received one of these fraudulent calls are encouraged to report the incident to the Sheriff's Office.

We ask that members of the public remain vigilant and share this information with family, friends, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims of these scams.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Shooting Incident in Cameron

Sheriff Mike Dougherty reports that on Monday, May 26, 2026, at approximately 12:55 a.m., Marshall County 911 received a call reporting a male subject attempting to force entry into a residence located on Dragon Highway in Cameron, West Virginia. During the incident, the suspect allegedly discharged multiple rounds into the occupied home.

Because the residence is located within the Cameron city limits, the Cameron Police Department initially responded to the scene. Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office also responded to assist. While officers were en route, Marshall County 911 advised responding units that shots had been fired at the residence.

Upon arrival, officers observed apparent bullet damage to the front of the home and located numerous spent 9mm shell casings along U.S. Route 250. Investigators later determined that approximately fifteen rounds had been fired into the residence, which was occupied by fifteen individuals at the time, including multiple juveniles.

The suspect was identified as Matthew Horn. According to witness statements, Horn had reportedly been involved in a verbal dispute with family members earlier in the evening before arriving at the residence. Witnesses stated that after attempting to gain entry into the home, Horn allegedly fired multiple rounds toward the residence while family members, including children, sought shelter inside.

Deputies and officers from the Cameron Police Department began searching the area for the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray Chevrolet Equinox. Officers later located the vehicle on Adams Hill Road and detained Horn without incident.

During the investigation, officers recovered a Ta**us PT809 9mm handgun from the vehicle. Following Miranda warnings, Horn allegedly admitted to discharging the firearm into the residence. Evidence collected at the scene included spent shell casings, projectiles recovered from inside the home, and the firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

Matthew Horn has been charged with:

-15 counts of Wanton Endangerment with a Firearm

-15 counts of Attempted Murder

-11 counts of Child Abuse

Creating Risk of Substantial Injury or Bodily Harm

Horn was transported to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office for processing before being lodged at the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail.

Due to the number of juveniles present during the incident, Child Protective Services was notified and will conduct follow-up as necessary.

Sheriff Dougherty would like to commend the responding deputies and officers from the Cameron Police Department for their quick response and coordinated efforts in bringing the situation under control without further injury.

Subject: Arrest of James Isaac Wood Following Domestic Violence Incident and Pursuit

Moundsville, WV — On May 22, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic violence incident at the AAA Trailer Park involving James Isaac Wood. Upon arrival, deputies learned that Wood allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and caused property damage inside her residence. As deputies approached, Wood fled the scene in a red Dodge Neon.

Deputies pursued Wood through Moundsville and across the 12th Street Bridge into Ohio, continuing southbound on Ohio Route 7. Due to the serious nature of the alleged offense, deputies maintained efforts to stop the vehicle. The pursuit concluded when Wood abruptly applied his brakes, lost control on the wet roadway, exited into a grassy area, and struck a fence. Deputies then apprehended Wood and took him into custody.

Wood faces numerous charges in West Virginia related to the incident, in addition to an active parole violation warrant. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has advised that they will also be filing charges in Ohio. This is the second incident involving Wood within the past week; he allegedly committed a prior domestic assault and fled before deputies arrived.

During the conclusion of the pursuit, wet road conditions contributed to a collision in which a responding deputy’s cruiser struck another deputy’s vehicle after the suspect’s car came to a stop. Both deputies were transported to WVU Reynolds Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Sheriff Mike Dougherty stated: “The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office takes domestic violence incidents very seriously. Pursuing this suspect into Ohio was necessary to protect the victim and safeguard our community. I am grateful that our deputies are okay and that there were no serious injuries. We thank the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their swift assistance and partnership.”

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office remains firmly committed to protecting victims, holding offenders accountable, and working with regional partners to remove from our streets individuals who pose a threat to the community.
