Please join us in congratulating our newest Advanced EMT graduates and 3 of North Carolina's newly credentialed Advanced EMT Providers! 🚑🔥

This class officially completed the program on Monday, May 18th, and over the past week, every single student has passed the North Carolina AEMT Credentialing Exam on their FIRST attempt!

From long class days filled with skills labs and scenarios, to demanding online coursework, to 120 clinical hours in the Emergency Department and on the ambulance, this group showed determination, grit, and a true passion for EMS every step of the way. Their work ethic and dedication to patient care have been evident from day one, and we couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the true cost of freedom and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

Their courage will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

Today, on EMS Recognition Day, we not only recognize the dedication and sacrifice of EMS professionals everywhere but also reflect on the history and growth of Emergency Medical Services in the United States.

Modern EMS has evolved tremendously over the last several decades, shaped by military medicine, community responders, and the landmark 1966 report “Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society,” which helped bring national attention to the need for organized emergency medical care. Since then, EMS professionals have become an essential part of healthcare and public safety — providing lifesaving care, compassion, and reassurance during some of life’s most critical moments.

At the Surry Community College Emergency Medical Program, we are proud to continue that tradition and deeply grateful for those who helped build the foundation before us. We would like to recognize and thank the former program directors, instructors, coordinators, and educators whose vision, leadership, and dedication helped shape this program and the countless EMS professionals who have come through it over the years. Your impact continues to be felt in classrooms, ambulances, hospitals, and communities every single day.

We are equally thankful for our current adjunct instructors and preceptors who continue that legacy by investing their time, knowledge, and mentorship into educating the next generation of EMS providers. Your dedication helps shape skilled, compassionate clinicians who will carry this profession forward.

Thank you to every EMR, EMT, Advanced EMT, Paramedic, dispatcher, educator, adjunct instructor, preceptor, past and current leaders, and first responder for the sacrifices you make and the lives you impact every day.

Happy EMS Recognition Day! đźš‘

Today, during EMS Week, we recognize EMS for Children Day — a day dedicated to the providers and systems committed to delivering specialized emergency care to our youngest patients.

Children are not simply “small adults.” Pediatric patients have unique airways, medication dosing, vital signs, injury patterns, emotional responses, and communication needs that require specialized training, equipment, and treatment approaches. Caring for children during emergencies demands not only clinical skill, but also compassion, patience, and the ability to support families during incredibly stressful moments.

Today also highlights the importance of pediatric readiness within EMS systems — ensuring agencies, providers, dispatch centers, and healthcare partners are prepared with the proper equipment, protocols, communication, and education needed to care for children safely and effectively.

At the Surry Community College Emergency Medical Program, we are proud to help prepare future EMS providers to care for patients of all ages through pediatric-focused education, hands-on training, and scenario-based learning that reflects the realities of prehospital medicine.

We also want to recognize the EMS clinicians, first responders, nurses, physicians, dispatchers, transport teams, educators, and hospital partners who work every day to provide age-appropriate care to children during emergencies. Your dedication makes a lasting impact on patients, families, and communities across North Carolina and beyond. 💙🚑

Scene Safe, BSI… if you know, you know.

Today, during EMS Week, we observe EMS Safety Day — a reminder that taking care of ourselves and one another is just as important as taking care of our patients.

The reality of EMS is that no two scenes are ever the same, and providers never truly know what they may be walking into. That’s why preparation, awareness, communication, teamwork, and training matter on every single call.

Safety in EMS goes beyond physical hazards — it also includes mental health, stress management, and looking out for one another after the difficult calls are over.

At the Surry Community College Emergency Medical Program, we are proud to help prepare future providers to serve with skill, compassion, professionalism, and a commitment to safety both on and off the truck.

Stay safe. Check on your partners. Take care of yourself. And thank you to all EMS professionals who continue to answer the call every day.

As EMS Week begins, we at the Surry Community College Emergency Medical Program are reminded how proud we are to help prepare the next generation of prehospital providers.

EMS is far more than ambulances, lights, sirens, and emergency scenes. Behind every call is a network of dedicated professionals — EMRs, EMTs, Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, Dispatchers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, educators, preceptors, and many others working together to serve their communities during life’s most difficult moments.

At Surry Community College, we have the privilege of watching students grow from learners building foundational skills into confident providers capable of delivering compassionate, professional, and high-quality care under pressure.

We are especially thankful for the instructors, clinical partners, field preceptors, and EMS agencies who invest their time, mentorship, and knowledge into our students every day. Those relationships between education and the field are what keep this profession strong.

EMS is built on sacrifice, resilience, teamwork, and service to others. We are honored to help prepare students for that responsibility and proud of every provider serving communities across Surry and Yadkin Counties and beyond.

Happy EMS Week from the Surry Community College Emergency Medical Program. Your work matters, and the impact you make never goes unnoticed.
