FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Congratulations AEMT Haylee Wilfong! We are proud of your achievement!

Please join us in congratulating our newest Advanced EMT graduates and 3 of North Carolina's newly credentialed Advanced EMT Providers! 🚑🔥

This class officially completed the program on Monday, May 18th, and over the past week, every single student has passed the North Carolina AEMT Credentialing Exam on their FIRST attempt!

From long class days filled with skills labs and scenarios, to demanding online coursework, to 120 clinical hours in the Emergency Department and on the ambulance, this group showed determination, grit, and a true passion for EMS every step of the way. Their work ethic and dedication to patient care have been evident from day one, and we couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Today, we pause to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or a holiday — it is a reminder that our freedom has come at a cost carried by generations of soldiers who never made it home.

We honor their sacrifice, remember their courage, and stand grateful for the freedoms they helped protect. Please take a moment today to reflect, remember, and never forget those who paid the ultimate price for our country.

EMS WEEK 2026 | EMS REMEMBRANCE DAY

As EMS Week 2026 comes to a close, today we remember those EMS professionals who gave their lives in service to others.

This profession is built on people who continue to show up during difficult moments, answer calls for help without hesitation, and put others before themselves. Behind every uniform and ambulance is a person who made a commitment to serve their community, no matter the circumstances.

Today, we remember those who are no longer with us, recognize the sacrifice they made, and honor the impact they left on this profession and the people around them. Their service and dedication should never be forgotten.

As we continue moving this profession forward, we carry their memory with us.

đźš‘ EMS WEEK 2026 | EMS RECOGNITION DAY đźš‘

Today is EMS Recognition Day, and during EMS Week, it is important to recognize not only what the public sees but also the work that happens behind the scenes every single day.
Most people see the ambulance responding to the emergency. What they do not always see is everything that happens before and after that call.

They do not see the equipment checks beforehand.
They do not see the training that continues long after class is over.
They do not see the reports being finished late at night, the trucks being cleaned and restocked, or the constant preparation for the next call.

They do not see providers checking on each other after difficult incidents or carrying the weight of the calls they answered that day.
EMS is more than lights and sirens. It is commitment, teamwork, preparation, compassion, and service to others, even on the hard days.

Today, we want to recognize all our Surry County EMS professionals who continue to show up for this profession and for our communities. The work you do matters, even when no one else sees it.
