It is National CPR and AED Awareness Week!

Here are a few important facts from the American Heart Association we would like to share.

1. More than 350,000 people experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States each year.

2. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

3. About 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home. The life you save with CPR is most likely to be a family member, friend, or loved one.

5. When an AED is used within the first minute of cardiac arrest, survival rates can be as high as 90%. Every minute that defibrillation is delayed decreases survival by approximately 7–10%.

Take 90 Seconds to learn how to save a life. Visit www.heart.org/handsonlycpr to watch the Hands-Only CPR instructional video and share it with the important people in your life. Hands-Only CPR is a natural introduction to CPR, and the AHA encourages everyone to learn conventional CPR as a next step. You can find a CPR class near you at www.heart.org/findacourse.

Hands-Only CPR can be just as effective as conventional CPR. Learn what Hands-Only CPR is and how to give it. The power is in your hands.

Celebrating 25 Years of Service!

This year, we are proud to recognize Stacy C., EMT, for 25 years of dedicated service with the Mt. Calvary Ambulance Service.

Stacy's journey began in 2000 shortly after she and her husband purchased their home in Mt. Calvary. An EMT from the service approached her and shared that the ambulance service was in need of volunteers, asking if she would be willing to take the EMT class and join the team.

At the time, Stacy was working at Schwarz's while also providing home care and hospice services. With a recent marriage, a new home, and a desire to become involved in her community, becoming an EMT felt like a perfect fit.

"I believe in giving back to the community in which one lives," Stacy shares. "It takes volunteers in all different roles to make a community run. I believed that this was where I could give back."

Over the past 25 years, Stacy has responded to countless calls and touched the lives of many people throughout our community. While there are many calls she remembers and reflects on, what stands out most is the opportunity to be a familiar face during someone's most difficult moments.

"I believe that sometimes I can be a familiar face to someone going through a scary or difficult time. I hope to bring a calming effect to some patients or their family members in their time of need."

When she's not serving our community, Stacy enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, gathering for Sunday night family dinners, and relaxing at the family cabin up north. She also enjoys hot yoga and, during the summer months, loves tending to her flowers and small garden.

For 25 years, Stacy has exemplified compassion, commitment, and community service. Thank you, Stacy, for the countless hours you've dedicated to helping others and for making a difference in the lives of so many.

Please join us in congratulating Stacy on this incredible milestone and thanking her for 25 years of service!

As EMS Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank the incredible EMS professionals, first responders, dispatchers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, healthcare teams, and community members who work together every day to help improve outcomes for those we serve.

Throughout the week, we had the opportunity to highlight just a few of the amazing people behind our ambulance service — individuals who chose EMS because they wanted to serve others, support their community, and make a difference during some of life’s hardest moments.

To our staff, volunteers, partner agencies, and the communities that support us: thank you. Your trust, encouragement, and continued support make it possible for us to do what we love every single day.

We are proud to serve this community — not just during EMS Week, but every day of the year.

EMS Week is a time to recognize the people behind the uniforms — the individuals who dedicate themselves to helping others during some of life’s most difficult moments. This year’s EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” reminds us that emergency medical services are built on teamwork, compassion, critical thinking, and a commitment to serving our communities.

At Mount Calvary Ambulance Service, every member of our team has their own reason for choosing EMS, but all share a passion for making a difference.

Stacey S., shared:
“I pursued a career in healthcare and EMS because I am driven to make a meaningful impact when it matters most. From the beginning, I recognized a strong desire to be someone others could rely on during critical moments.

I am particularly drawn to the intensity, chaos, unpredictability, and problem-solving nature of EMS. The field demands the ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-pressure situations, yet offers an incredible feeling of purpose and meaningfulness.

I also get to meet some great people along this journey. Working EMS in a smaller community allows you to personalize care and make a scary situation for patients and their families just a little bit better.”

Stacy C. said:
“I joined the ambulance service so I could give back to the community that I live in. I am proud to live in the community that we serve.”

Emma W. shared:
“I am in EMS because I want to offer comfort and hope to individuals on what could be their worst day. I also became an EMT to help prepare for my future career. Through this job, I have learned how to become a critical thinker and develop strong skills in emergency medicine.”

Carli T. said:
“I work in EMS because it gives me a sense of purpose knowing I am serving the community and helping others in times of need.”

Aspen T. shared:
“I gained an interest in emergency response after taking CPR for my dental assistant job. I recognized how essential it is to act quickly and lead in a moment of chaos. I wanted to be part of that.

I love being part of EMS because it truly matters. It is never promised to be easy, but I know I can make an impact on people during some of their worst days, reach out to those in need, and be a clear mind in moments of chaos.

Through this job, I have learned so much. I have recognized that each personality has something unique to offer in emergency response. This is a position built on teamwork, compassion, and critical thinking. No day is the same and no patient is the same — and that is a beautiful thing.”

Tyler B. simply stated:
“To give back to the community.”

Each story is different, but together they represent the heart of EMS. Whether responding to emergencies, comforting patients and families, solving problems under pressure, or simply being there when someone needs help most, our crews work every day to improve outcomes together.

This EMS Week, we thank all of our EMTs, AEMTs, Paramedics, drivers, first responders, dispatchers, fire departments, educators, and supporters for the dedication, sacrifice, and compassion they bring to our communities each and every day. ❤️
