Meet the Tick: Lone Star Tick Edition ⭐

🏷️ Name: Lone Star Tick
πŸ”¬ Scientific Name: Amblyomma americanum

πŸ” How to Spot It

Adult females have a distinctive white dot on their backs
Adult males have scattered white markings around the edges of their backs
Aggressive biters that actively seek hosts

πŸ“ Found in Illinois?

βœ… Yes! Lone Star ticks are present in Illinois and have become increasingly common in many parts of the state.

⚠️ Why They Matter

Lone Star ticks have been associated with:

Ehrlichiosis
Tularemia
Alpha-gal syndrome (a red meat allergy linked to tick bites)

πŸ›‘οΈ Fight the Bite

Reduce your chances of a tick bite by:

βœ” Using EPA-registered insect repellent

βœ” Wearing long sleeves and long pants in tick habitat

βœ” Performing a full-body tick check after spending time outdoors
βœ” Checking children and pets for ticks
βœ” Showering soon after coming indoors

πŸ’‘ Did You Know?

Unlike some tick species that wait for hosts to pass by, Lone Star ticks can actively move toward people and animals after detecting body heat, movement, and carbon dioxide.

🌎 World Environment Day

Today is a reminder that the health of our planet is
connected to the health of every person, family, and
community.

Small actions make a big differenceβ€”reducing waste,
recycling, conserving water, planting trees, and
choosing reusable over single-use items all help
protect our environment for future generations. 🌱

Let’s work together to keep our air cleaner, our water
safer, and our communities healthierβ€”today and every
day.

🌿 Every choice matters. Every action counts.
