What is the difference between Vegetative and Engineered Practices?

Conservation looks different on every farm. While vegetative practices use living plants to improve soil health and protect water quality, engineered practices use built structures to manage water flow and reduce erosion.

Both play an important role in creating healthier, more resilient landscapes. 🌾

Soil conservation is how we got our start, but water conservation is a major part of our mission! We can help you improve your irrigation efficiency by creating an irrigation water management plan that uses irrigation devices like soil moisture sensors, flow meters, and/or surge valves to measure and control the amount of water used. Increased efficiency for irrigation can lower overall input and labor costs while maintaining or improving yields.

With the Illinois State Fair in full swing, we would like to give a shout out to our farm families for the Illinois Farm Family of the Year Award that we give out with Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Congratulations to Buhcanon Family of Lazy B Farm!

Nominated by the Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District, Lazy B Farm is operated by brothers Benjamin, Samuel, and Zachary Buchanan in Lawrence County, Illinois.

This diversified family farm raises pigs and turkeys while producing conventional and certified organic corn, soybeans, and wheat. Their commitment to conservation spans generations—from terraces first built by their grandfather in the 1970s and ’80s to today’s use of no-till and minimal tillage, cover crops, and responsible manure management to protect and improve their soil.

At the heart of Lazy B Farm is a simple goal: to honor God through their business and stewardship of the land, while leaving their soil in better condition for their children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

We are proud to recognize the Buchanan family and Lazy B Farm for their dedication to agriculture, conservation, and the future of Illinois farmland. Congratulations!
