Mount Carroll District Library Our mission is to serve as a gathering place and a gateway to knowledge, community resource and opportunities for life-long learning.

All programs offered at the Mount Carroll District Library are free! Our History:
In 1907, a group of Mt. Carroll Township citizens, wishing to establish a library, garnered support and secured a building site. The plans were submitted and approved by Andrew Carnegie and a two - story brick building was completed in May of 1908. After the building construction was completed, 1,250 books were cataloged and classified, and the Mt. Carroll Township Public Library opened its doors in August of 1908.

Mark your calendars and get ready for another amazing event held by the Friends of the Library here at the Mount Carroll Library. In this event, we will be joined by Dr. Stephen Harrick as he discusses Comic Book Culture and Illinois: A Living History of how these two seemingly different topics are actually more alike and hand-in-hand than we may think. Join us for this inspiring event and get a comic to take home with you! This event is completely FREE and open to the public (much like the comics we read in the newspapers haha), and we hope to see you there! This event will take place Saturday, September 12th at 1pm.

CELEBRATE LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH!

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and we're celebrating at the Mount Carroll District Library!

A library card opens the door to books, movies, programs, digital resources, research tools, and so much more—and this September, there's a little extra incentive to sign up!

NEW LIBRARY CARDHOLDERS = A CHANCE TO WIN!

Everyone who signs up for a new library card at the Mount Carroll District Library during the month of September will have their name entered into a drawing for one of two $50-value gift baskets:

Children's Gift Basket – for our younger library lovers! Adult Gift Basket – for our adult patrons!

Drawing: September 30, 2026, at closing Winners notified: October 1, 2026

There is no purchase or payment required to enter or win, and obtaining a library card is free. Signing up for a library card does not guarantee a prize. One entry per new cardholder during the promotion period.

Official Promotion Information: Promotion period: September 1–30, 2026. Two prizes will be awarded: one children's gift basket valued at approximately $50 and one adult gift basket valued at approximately $50. Winners will be selected at random from eligible new cardholders. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received. Winners will be notified by the contact information provided to the library. If a selected winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within a reasonable period determined by the library, the library may select an alternate winner. The Mount Carroll District Library reserves the right to verify eligibility before awarding a prize. No cash substitution will be provided. Prizes are non-transferable. This promotion is not sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or affiliated with Facebook/Meta. By participating, entrants agree to these promotion rules.

Mark your calendars for an interesting history lecture from Highland Community College on the assassination of President James Garfield. From the shooting on the morning of July 2nd, 1881, to his death on September 19th. Biographies of Garfield and the assassin Charles Guiteau (who grew up in Freeport, IL), US culture, medical treatment, and the capture, trial, and ex*****on of Guiteau will be explored.
