Mount Gilead, North Carolina is a gem of a town located in Montgomery County in the Uwharrie Mountains. Our department proudly serves our 1180 residents.

The Mount Gilead Police Department is a progressive law enforcement agency that incorporates community policing, regional cooperation, and effective collaboration with surrounding state and local agencies. Mount Gilead Police Department located and arrested Christopher James Taylor. Taylor is wanted in connection with crimes in Alabama and Georgia. Officers arrested Taylor this afternoon without incident. Taylor is being held in the Montgomery County Detention Center without bond awaiting pickup from Alabama authorities.

Public Information:

On 6/27/2026 the Mount Gilead Police Department received a complaint about a social media post that a town resident had made on Facebook regarding numerous cats at their residence. The resident stated in the post that “someone needs to come get these cats or they would go bye bye in a week”. A threat was not made to harm or kill the cats and has caused serious concerns in and around the town of Mount Gilead due to the wording of the statement made in the video. Detective Wood from the Mount Gilead Police Department received the complaint and looked into this social media post shortly after he talk with AC2 at Montgomery County Animal Services on 6/27/2026, and was informed that they they had no room for any new intakes at this time. On 6/28/2026 the detective went to the residence of the individual that made the social media post and talked to the owners. The owner of the property and his wife told the detective that they had also talk to Montgomery County Animal Services and that they were told it would be a week before they could come collect the cats because they had reached full capacity and that this is why the statement was made in the post stating, the cats would be going “bye bye in a week” referring to Animal Services coming to get them. While on scene the detective also observed approximately 15-20 cats/kittens in the yard and was also informed that they had been feeding the animals and would continue to feed them until Animal Services could come and get them. The animals on the property did not have any apparent injuries or looked like they had been neglected or abused. At this time there has been no crime committed or threats made to harm any animals. The owner of the property is willing to give the cats to anyone who may be interested. If anyone is interested please contact the Mount Gilead Police Department (910) 439-6711.

Attn: We have received several calls from citizens in reference to scooters, skateboards and bicycles riding on the sidewalk and in the roadway. Here are the Town of Mount Gilead Code-Of Ordinances that cover these topics. Please follow these guidelines, as public safety is our highest priority. Attention: The Mount Gilead Police Department has partnered with First Health - Community Health to provide food to those in need. We will be located in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church, here in Mt. Gilead and will start at 12 noon and end at 4pm or until supplies last on April 1, 2026. This is NO April Fools Joke! Everyone please share and come out to receive a food box, this Wednesday!
