After 38.5 incredible years as the Director of Northfield Mount Hermon Dining Services, Rich Messer P ‘06, ’13, ‘16, who has put his heart and soul into the culinary success of NMH, always making sure students have had the most delicious (and nutritious!) meals around, is retiring! Along with his dedication to our dining program, Rich has also been an excellent ambassador, mentor and leader on the hardwood, serving as Girls’ Varsity Basketball coach for many years. Whether you spent four years at NMH or just an afternoon, Rich has probably had a positive impact on your experience either directly or indirectly (by way of his team). Rich navigated NMH Dining Services though turbulent waters, including the campus consolidation, the safety enhancements of Alumni Hall resulting from COVID-19, a full departmental realignment, and everything in between, often behind the scenes and always with a smile on his face, wearing his head, heart and hand on his sleeves.

In a capstone project piece by Soren Anderson-Flynn ‘25, Rich commented: “I’m really competitive, and one of the things I’ve always believed was that I could play a role in making NMH better than other schools. We compete with all these schools for the best kids. Well, if we have a great dining program, that’ll help kids want to pick this one. If we have a great dining program, our faculty will want to stay here because they’ll feel cared for and taken care of.”

During his time at NMH, Rich was always competitive for us, even when we didn’t know there was any competition at all, and we are all beneficiaries of that competitiveness. Everyone attending NMH Reunion this weekend (Rich’s final event as an NMH employee!): Take a moment to thank Rich, and his team, for all they’ve done for this place we love so much. Enjoy retirement, Rich!

With an incredibly heavy heart, we share the passing of former longtime NMH staff member, Wilbur Stauch “Bill” Hattendorf, Jr., P ‘01, ‘02, ‘08, whom we lost on May 11, 2026. In 1986, Bill took a job at NMH in the advancement office, where he met the love of his life, former longtime choral director Sheila Heffernon. Upon hiring Bill, the advancement director at the time told Sheila, “I just hired your future husband.” The two of them did fall in love, married, and raised Wesley, Kelsey, and Spencer. Bill also fell in love with NMH, where for 36 years, he was the advisor of the Radio Station (WNMH), and during that time, navigated WNMH both into the digital age and from its original physical home in the basement of Stone Hall, to its current home in the basement of Crossley Hall. Bill also helped relaunch “Community Circle” to support family life on campus, and served as a chaperone for many choir trips throughout the world. Outside of his NMH life, Bill was very involved in the veteran community, having served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Bill also devoted a lifetime of service and commitment to Chi Psi National Fraternity, starting in the late-60s as a student at the University of Georgia, holding many titles, including seven years as National President, and six years as Executive Director, among others. During that time, he attended a record-57 Chi Psi Conventions, a record that will likely never be broken. Often behind the scenes, Bill was an invaluable member of the NMH community and will be incredibly missed. Please keep your thoughts with Bill’s wife, Sheila, sons Spencer Hattendorf ‘08 and Wesley Sullivan ‘01, and daughter Kelsey Sullivan ‘02, as well as all of Bill’s family and friends. We are proud to celebrate Liz McGrath ‘76 with an NMH Alumni Association Community Service Award. Liz is a co-founder and former Executive Director of Pegasus Legal Services for Children in Albuquerque, NM; a non-profit that has transformed the lives of hundreds of vulnerable children and families.

A Hampshire College and UNM School of Law graduate, Liz has spent her career as a fierce advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Her landmark work was instrumental in the passage of New Mexico’s 2001 Kinship Guardianship Act, landmark legislation that keeps children with their families and out of the foster care system by empowering relatives to become official caregivers.

Through Pegasus, she built innovative programs supporting grandparents raising grandchildren, young parents, and homeless youth. She has educated professionals and caregivers across New Mexico about the legal rights of children.

As a law professor, community leader, and lifelong public servant, Liz embodies the very best of “The Head, The Hand, and The Heart”, the enduring philosophy of Dwight Moody and the Northfield Mount Hermon School. Thank you, Liz, for a lifetime of service. Your work is a beacon for us all.
