The Rancocas Nature Center staff was saddened to hear of the passing of one of our long-time volunteers, Louise Tompkins. Louise started volunteering with the nature center in the 1990's when it was a NJ Audubon Center. She continued to volunteer weekly in our bookstore into her 90's until 2020 when the center briefly shut down during COVID. Many of you may remember her wonderful smile, friendly and professional mannerisms, and her enthusiasm for birds. Rest in peace Louise and thank you for so many years of support, dedication, and friendship.

Migratory bat sightings wanted!

In the fall, a few migratory bat species travel through NJ on the way to their winter destinations. They can be found roosting in random places along the way - clinging to window screens, exteriors of buildings, walls of parking garages - especially along the shore and in urban areas where forest is lacking. These bats are usually solitary and may rest in place for several days before continuing their journey. We are trying to learn more about that journey using public sightings and best-available technologies. You can help!

NJDEP Fish & Wildlife's Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP) has a few ultra-lightweight transmitters to attach to bats this fall. The tags use a new detection technology that could unlock far more information and precision than ever possible before. The ENSP is specifically looking for Eastern Red Bats, Northern Hoary Bats, and Silver-haired Bats.

If you spot one of these bats roosting, please take a photo and email it with the bat’s location to [email protected]. Please do not disturb or touch any bats you find.

It's Fall, time for Mount Holly NJ to plant Daffodil Bulbs!!! Plant bulbs now and witness the splendor of vibrant flowers blooming throughout our town. Don't mow over or cut leaves off until they turn brown, allowing the bulb to harness its energy and bloom magnificently each year 😊.

Please join The Save Mount Holly's Woods organization in welcoming Mark Thomas, Co-Founder and VP of the Rancocas Conservancy, as he leads a walk through Mount Holly's historic woods and landscape. Back in May, Commissioner Shawn LaTourette announced an innovative land acquisition and preservation initiative that will enhance the work of out CHANJ Program.

So what is CHANJ? 🐾

Connecting Habitat Across New Jersey (CHANJ) is an effort to make our landscape and roadways more permeable for terrestrial wildlife by identifying key areas and actions needed to achieve habitat connectivity across the state.

funding legislation signed earlier this year by Governor Murphy for the first time prioritizes the acquisition of lands in 235 municipalities across the state for conservation purposes because of their importance in connecting wildlife habitats.

The state’s new strategy includes increased collaboration with non-profits and municipal officials in identifying opportunities to engage with residents about property purchases.
