On Saturday, May 16, Petrece experienced sudden cardiac arrest while cycling on our local bike trail.

This Wednesday, she walked into our station to thank her rescuers.

Petrece's story is proof the Chain of Survival can and does work, but it can only work if everyone knows their "link" and acts decisively without hesitation. Until "the help" arrives, you are the help; according to the 2025 CARES report, 42.5% of U.S. cardiac arrest patients received bystander CPR.

On May 16, the chain stretched unbroken for Petrece: rapid bystander 911 activation; a fast response from our Mount Horeb police officers; lifesaving compression, AED, and airway interventions from our FDMH EMS and Fire crews; Advanced Life Support transfer of care to our mutual aid partners at Fitch-Rona EMS; skilled inpatient care at the UW Hospital; and Petrece walking into our station on an otherwise unassuming Wednesday morning, looking and sounding terrific on her recovery journey.

When every link holds, we can save lives. Need help learning CPR or how to use an AED? Find a class today: redcross.org/take-a-class

May marks AEMT Tyler Lewis' third anniversary with FDMH!

Tyler is currently an undergrad at UW-La Crosse where he's majoring in computer science with a minor in biology. Tyler is also finishing up medic school, and looks forward to joining our paramedic ranks.

In his limited free time (!), Tyler enjoys being outdoors to travel, hike, and fish, as well as developing apps for phones and computers. He's also working on his private pilot's license to continue his adventures from the sky.

Tyler enjoys the comradery of the station. When asked about fun stories to share, Tyler recalled the time an EMS dad tried out the intern's hoverboard.

Please help us thank Tyler for his service to our community!

This week we give our gratitude to our EMS professionals who spend days and nights away from their families to take care of your family. For the many hours of required training and continued certifications, to the lifesaving skills and deep compassion delivered on scene, thank you to our FDMH EMS members who answer the toughest of calls.

This month marks firefighter Jesse Kietzke's 3rd anniversary with FDMH! As you can see from her adorable snapshot (pictured with brother Lt. Ben Kietzke, FDMH firefighter, and father Ken Kietzke, FDMH firefighter), she's been moving hoselines much longer. Read why it's all in the family for Kietzke, and help us celebrate her dedication.

"FDMH has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up with both of my parents serving as volunteer firefighters, the department was always a constant in our family. After graduating college and moving back to Mt. Horeb, joining the department felt like coming home.

Today, I proudly serve with both the Mt. Horeb Fire Department and the Barneveld-Brigham Fire Department. Outside of the station, you can usually find me at work, at the gym, or spending time with family and friends. I work as a construction project manager for a general contractor in Mt. Horeb.

One of my favorite parts of being a firefighter is the opportunity to serve my community while continuing to challenge myself and grow. I also have the privilege of serving alongside my dad, Ken, my brother, Ben, my fiancΓ©, Brian, and my soon-to-be sister-in-law, Maddi.

The Kietzke name has long been a part of FDMH, and I’m proud to continue that tradition."πŸš’

This week our friends at Ingleside hosted a first responder brunch. We enjoyed bagels, egg bake, and great conversation with residents and staff. We were sent back to the station with cookies and cards, too. Thank you!

The Mount Horeb Area Joint Fire Department is proud to announce our 2025 Responders of the Year, an honor voted on by membership and recently recognized at our annual banquet.

Firefighter Ken Kietzke was presented with our 2025 Firefighter of the Year award. Kietzke has served in the fire industry for over 50 years, and frequently holds the FDMH title of responding to the most calls. He is the proud foreman of Engine 3, and loves serving alongside his son and daughter.

Firefighter/Paramedic Jamison Brinkmann was presented with our 2025 EMS Provider of the Year award. Brinkmann was recognized for his impressive work ethic, willingness to train others, and commitment to providing top-notch patient care. Brinkmann frequently responds as a volunteer on his days off, further demonstrating his dedication to serving his community.

Congratulations, Ken & Jamison!

April is National Volunteer Month, and we have some of the best! Here's a photo of our firefighters during last week's brush truck training, led by volunteer firefighter Ken Kietzke. FDMH responded to 12 outside fires this March.
