Step into Better Health: Walk Across Arkansas Returns for Fall 2026

As health challenges continue to impact youth across the state—where 23% of youth in Arkansas are overweight or obese and 23.1% face food insecurity—establishing healthy habits early is more important than ever. To foster physical well-being, teamwork, and personal growth, the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture is launching the Fall 2026 session of Walk Across Arkansas.

Running from September 7 through November 1, Walk Across Arkansas is a free, 8-week, team-based physical activity program designed for participants of all ages. Teams of up to 30 people set fitness goals and keep each other motivated through friendly competition.

Local Competition Spotlight

The Montgomery County Extension office is leading the charge by assembling their own team, The Montgomery County Crystals. They are challenging local businesses, school groups, community organizations, and families to step up and join in on some friendly competition. Gather your friends, co-workers, or family members, form your team, and get moving this fall!

Benefits for Youth and Students

Physical activity directly supports both health and academic outcomes for youth:

· Academic Performance: Regular exercise increases motivation, sharpens concentration, and improves classroom grades and test scores.

· Behavioral & Mental Health: Physical activity lowers the risk of depression, decreases sedentary screen time, and reduces disruptive behaviors in school settings.

· Life Skills: Students learn key health principles, goal-setting, self-reflection, problem-solving, and how to support their peers effectively.

The youth program provides 8 weeks of educational newsletters, paper tracking options, and an online portal where teachers or students can log active minutes. Certificates are awarded to top teams at the conclusion of the session.

Benefits for Adults and Community Members

Past adult participants have experienced measurable health improvements, reporting:

· Better sleep patterns and improved stress management.

· Weight loss and reduced body measurements.

· Improved blood pressure readings and lab panels.

· Stronger relationships through group accountability and shared goals.
