The last few days of the legislative session are fast-moving and very exciting. Earlier this week, I was delighted to introduce on the floor of the Assembly seven impressive students who are (or will soon be) interning in my district office.

Joining me were seniors Hasti Shahdad from John Jay High School, who will be attending Hunter College this fall to study political science; Heather Millman from Byram Hills High School, who be attending NYU in the fall and majoring in Liberal studies; Avni Sundaram, also at Byram Hills High School, who will be attending Georgetown University in the fall to study environmental policy; and Emma Tong from Horace Greeley High School, who will be attending the University of North Carolina, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. Also joining were Ethan Mishler, a junior at John Jay High School; Rachel Horesh, a freshman at John Jay High School; and Avani Shandilya, a freshman at Briarcliff High School.

My thanks to Speaker Carl Heastie, Senator Jamaal Bailey, and Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms Wayne Jackson for taking the time to speak with and educate the students, and – as the future is in their hands – to encourage them to use their passion and education for the public good.

Plaudits to the Vista Fire Department for day in and day out protecting the community. We are truly indebted for the selfless service and sacrifice of the volunteers.

It was an honor to attend the Department’s annual Inspection Dinner on Saturday, where the following outstanding volunteers were honored: Phil Wanderman (Special Recognition for his brave and courageous actions assisting efforts to reach trapped occupants at the fatal fire in Cross River which took two lives), Peter Cipriano (Firefighter of the Year), Ashtin Rama (Rookie of the Year), Daniel Castelhano (EMT of the Year) and Steve Woodstead (45 Years of Service).

Saturday was a red letter day for Rocket Maxwell Easton Streich, who ascended to the rank of Eagle at his Court of Honor. It was a privilege to be on hand to recognize Rocket for his terrific accomplishment - only 2% of Scouts attain the Eagle rank, which is the highest in Scouting.

Rocket directed, filmed, and edited a six minute documentary “What Makes You Come to the Chappaqua Library?”, in which he interviewed over 30 patrons to share their memorable experiences at the library.

Congratulations Rocket!

The Village of Mount Kisco held their Memorial Day ceremony this past Saturday in Fountain Park at Village Hall. Veterans in attendance were honored during the ceremony, and a large contingent of residents were on hand to mark the solemn occasion.

It was an honor to be there.

Our thanks to our Legislative Intern Bennett Grimaldi, who was based in Albany, for his outstanding service this session. He has been a great help.

I was delighted to present a NYS Citation on May 29, his last day in our office, in recognition of his work. We will miss him.

It was a privilege to be on hand Saturday at 6:30 AM, at Westchester County Airport, for the send off of eight Veterans participating in the Hudson Valley Honor Flight. The program is an all-expenses-paid trip provided to United States military veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, DC, so they can experience the monuments and memorials built in their honor.

It was an amazing event with a sizable crowd at Hangar 1. There were six Honor Flight veterans from my district: John F. Brown, William E. Hamilton, James Polos, George Rosamond, Bernard R. Seiler, and Lester Simon.

It was very convenient to donate blood in Albany Thursday at the Legislative Office Building. The Red Cross carried it out with efficiency and good cheer. I thank them for the life-saving work they do every day.

Blood donations in May were significantly below expected levels, with collections down approximately 15% due to a combination of factors. Donating blood helps to save lives. If you are in a position to donate, please consider contacting the American Red Cross in Greater New York or the New York Blood Center to find a location to donate.

Happy Pride Month! Despite the chilly weather, it was a joyous and festive day at Lewisboro Town Park on Saturday for the town’s annual Pride celebration.

The event was chock-full of events, including the Pet Pride Parade, Drag Queen Storytime (in collaboration with the Lewisboro Library) and over 20 community organization tables. Congratulations to the organizers for another successful event!

On Wednesday, I participated in two press conferences focused on holding down utility rates.

The first was in support of a bill to authorize the establishment of a public authority to acquire Central Hudson Gas & Electric. A recently-completed feasibility study estimates the acquisition would save utility customers $15 million in the first year of operation alone.

The second press conference was in support of the SUNNY Act, which would remove regulatory barriers to the use of small, plug-in solar generation devices in residential and commercial buildings, allowing connection through electrical outlets. This bill would benefit renters as well as residents in condominiums and co-ops.
