The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation cordially invites all NC Fire Departments and families to join us for the 21st Annual NC Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Saturday, May 9, 2026. We will pay tribute to 12 NC Fallen Firefighters who died in the line of duty, while honoring their families, departments, and friends. The Memorial Service will take place at 1:00 PM in historic Nash Square in downtown Raleigh.

The day will begin at approximately 10:30AM with a static parade of line-of-duty department apparatus. Unfortunately, due to continued construction in the area and the City of Raleigh’s current ban on parades having vehicles, we are still unable to have a traditional rolling parade. We will, however, have Fire apparatus to take part in the static parade that ends at Nash Square. All apparatus will arrive at Nash Square together and will be positioned around the square before the Memorial service.

We need your help! This very special Service is for our “Angel” families as well as our larger fire service family, so please come and give them the honor and respect that they so deserve. The Memorial service is a critical reminder to our families and friends that they are not alone in their journey and that we care for them and the loved one they lost. We want our families, our comrades, and the community to experience the full traditions of the Fire Service, including Pipes & Drums, Honor guards, and the Sea of Blue. We certainly could not do this without your participation and support!

Pipers and Drummers wishing to take part in the service may contact Adam Moore at (336) 590-2009. Honor Guard personnel wishing to take part in the service may contact Rick Wood at (828) 674-1899. Fire departments who would like to take part in the Fire Apparatus static parade may contact Jonathan Southard at (336) 469-8447 or Chris Hicks at (828) 320-5781).

“Angel” families from prior years are always welcome and are encouraged to come back each year to meet the new families and help with various activities. “Angel” Family members wishing to help or to attend the Angel Family dinner on May 8th may contact Kathy Guyer-Martin (NCFFF Secretary) at (910) 388-7464.

Hotels in and around the area are filling up quickly. Departments and Personnel wishing to attend this year’s Memorial Service should make their arrangements now. If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out to Kathy Guyer-Martin.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.

The Wayne County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a burn ban for all of Wayne County, effective at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10. The ban will remain in place until further notice.

This follows a statewide burn ban issued on March 28. The county ban allows local officials to enforce the restriction and issue penalties for violations.

Dry conditions, weather that can help fires spread quickly, and little rain in the forecast have increased the risk of wildfires. Residents are asked not to burn outdoors until the ban is lifted to help protect people, homes, and first responders.
