🚜🌾 Public Notice: Wheat Field Burning Season 🌾🚜

As wheat harvest season begins across Sampson County, residents may notice smoke from fields throughout the area. Many local farmers utilize controlled burns to remove crop residue and prepare their fields for the next planting season. These burns are a common agricultural practice and are typically conducted under controlled conditions with careful monitoring.

If you see smoke or a field being burned, there is generally no cause for alarm. However, if you observe a fire that appears to be spreading beyond the intended area, threatening structures, or appears to be out of control, please call 911 immediately so emergency personnel can respond and assess the situation.

Jordans Chapel Fire Department is proud to announce we’ve been awarded a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The Foundation awarded our department two Scott Air-Paks, two face pieces, and four SCBA cylinders valued at over $20,000. This gear helps our firefighters safely protect our community.

Thank you, Firehouse Subs, for investing in our first responders.

Picture this:

It’s 2:14 AM in Wayne County.
Rain pouring. Somebody’s house is on fire. Kids are standing outside barefoot. A family’s entire life is changing in real time.

And somewhere nearby, a pager goes off.

Not for a superhero.
Not for a paid celebrity athlete.
For an ordinary person who decided to volunteer.

A mechanic.
A lineman.
A farmer.
A water plant operator.
A person who was sitting on the couch 3 minutes ago.

That person gets up, throws on shoes, and goes.

That could be you.

Most people spend their lives wanting to matter more. Wanting purpose. Wanting something real. Volunteer fire service gives you that immediately. When you show up on scene, people are relieved just because you arrived.

You’ll do things most people never experience:

* Ride a fire engine lights and sirens through your own community
* Train with people who become family
* Push yourself physically and mentally
* Learn how to stay calm when everybody else panics
* Be part of something bigger than yourself

And years from now, when somebody says:

“Thank God the fire department got here…”

You’ll know you were part of that.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be fearless. Every firefighter started as the new guy who didn’t know anything.

What matters is showing up.

Wayne County’s volunteer departments need people willing to answer the call. Not someday. Now.

So the real question is:

If your community needed help tonight… would you want to be standing on the sidelines watching, or stepping off the truck helping?

Also a burning ban is still in effect statewide as well as a countywide burning ban for Wayne County. Fines can be imposed during this time.

As wind gusts increase ahead of an approaching cold front, combined with low relative humidity and dry fuels, there will be increased fire danger for much of our forecast area on Saturday.

04/13/2026

Increased Fire Danger is in effect through 8PM for the western Piedmont and Sandhills. Very dry fuels along with gusty winds and low relative humidity. The NC Forest Service has issued a statewide Burn Ban.
