A big thank you to our SHIP/SMP volunteers for the time, care, and commitment you continue to give in support of our communities. Your work makes a real difference in helping individuals navigate Medicare and protect themselves from fraud and misinformation.

We recently provided updated training for our volunteers covering important SHIP/SMP topics, including current Medicare fraud issues, as well as assistance with completing applications and renewals for clients who receive help from the state with Medicare costs. Staying current on these topics helps ensure we can continue providing accurate, trusted guidance to those we serve.

‼️We are currently in need of volunteers in the following counties:
Giles, Hickman, Moore, Lincoln, and Wayne.‼️

If you are interested in becoming a SHIP/SMP volunteer or would like more information, we would love to hear from you. 1-877-801-0044

South Central Area Agency on Aging & Disability (SCAAAD) is proud to celebrate Older Americans Month this May! Led by the Administration for Community Living, this annual observance recognizes the contributions of older adults and highlights the importance of supporting healthy aging in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and taking an active role in your own well-being.

We embraced this message by participating in Chair Yoga, led by Deena Alexander. This low-impact session showed that staying active can be accessible, effective, and fun—even for those with limited mobility.

We encourage you to get moving and try Chair Yoga today! 🧘‍♀️

Behind the work of SCTDD is a dedicated Board of Directors made up of the 48 mayors from across the communities served throughout the South Central region.

The full Board of Directors is invited to attend quarterly meetings, while the Executive Committee serves as the organization’s voting body. The Executive Committee consists of 13 county mayors, 6 city mayors, 3 minority representatives, 1 state representative, and 1 state senator who help guide the organization and support its mission.

A sincere note of appreciation to these local leaders for the time, thought, and commitment they bring to this role while also serving their own communities each day.

A Safe Place for Giles County Youth: A Grant Success Story with The Pouring Spot

Giles County was a recipient of a Community Development Block Grant supporting efforts to address food insufficiency in the community. This grant, awarded through the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, helps support local efforts to ensure individuals and families have better access to food and related community resources.

One of those organizations is The Pouring Spot, which provides a safe and welcoming space for youth in Giles County. By creating an environment where young people can connect with supportive adults, access resources, and build community, The Pouring Spot is helping strengthen the overall well-being of local families.

SCTDD has initiated a Geographic Information System (GIS) Planning & Decision-Support effort with GIS Mapping and Overlays prepared by The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Funded through a 604(b) Planning Grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the project will support the development of GIS data related to land use, infrastructure, growth, and conservation.

The platform is intended to assist local governments, utilities, and regional partners by improving access to information that supports planning and coordination.

Initial work will focus on a multi-county pilot area, with the potential to expand resources and tools across the region over time.
