The Mount Pleasant S***t Team competed in the Texas S***t Shooting State Tournament on June 6 in Waco. Overall, MP placed 2nd place as a team with score of 419, just 2 points shy of first place at 421. In just their 3rd year in existence, MPISD has had team and individual state champions and runners up all three years.

Individually, Lance Albin placed 4th with a 90, Garrett Brown placed 6th with an 89, and George Fite was 13th with an 82. Brown also earned a patch for shooting a perfect round of 25 at the tournament. For the JV, Samuel Carroll was 4th with an 81, Nathan Standefer placed 7th with a 77, and Cooper Tallant was 11th with a 71. And among novice competitors, Brian Derrick placed 10th with a 52.

“We want to extend our sincere appreciation to B&W Pawn for their generous shotshell donation, Clays-N-More Gun Club for providing range access, and Roberts A/C for helping cover target costs,” said coach Josh Blackstone. “Your generosity helps make this season possible, and we truly appreciate your support.”

Members of the 2026-2027 MPHS Tiger Dolls leadership team attended the American Dance/Drill Team Officer Camp from May 27-29 at the Hilton Dallas/Rockwall Lakefront Hotel in Rockwall. Throughout camp, officers and sergeants participated in dance training, leadership development sessions, and planning activities designed to prepare them for the upcoming school year. The officers were judged on three performance routines, while the sergeants were evaluated on creative projects, with both groups earning an impressive collection of awards.

🌟As a leadership team, the officers and sergeants earned the Spirit of ADTS award, recognizing squads that best demonstrate exceptional teamwork, positivity, and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the camp.

🌟The officers received the Diamond Sweepstakes award and were voted the Gussie Nell Davis Team of the Week.

🌟The Sergeants received the Gussie Nell Davis Team of the Day on day 2, the Award of Excellence, and were the Grand Champion Social Officers.

Mount Pleasant High School senior, Brissia Alvarez, placed 4th in 5A News Writing at the UIL State Academic Meet on Monday, May 18, earning her second UIL State medal. Alvarez won silver in Ready Writing in 2024.

Remarkably, Alvarez had never competed in News Writing until the district meet in March, due to the event conflicting with Spelling. She spent just a few days preparing for the event with her adviser to learn the format, rules, and how to compose a story for the competition. Alvarez took third place at district in her first ever competition, advancing her to region. She then placed second in her second ever meet, advancing to state. And finally, she placed fourth overall in the entire state of Texas and was the top finisher among those from region 2 who competed in state news writing.

In News Writing, students are given a prompt and have 45 minutes to respond with a news story. The judging criteria includes a lead that consists of the most timely and newsworthy information, facts presented in descending order of importance, and use of direct and indirect quotes, among other writing, spelling, style and grammar considerations. This year’s 5A state prompt concerned a newly installed school lockdown system, and competitors were tasked with writing a news story for a high school newspaper.

Alvarez graduated as the Valedictorian of the MPHS Class of 2026 and will attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Biochemistry. She was coached by John Whitten.
