๐Ÿคฏ DID YOU KNOW??

Right at the mouth of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant lies Crab Bank. This little island is a protected seabird sanctuary. It serves as a vital nesting and roosting area for coastal and migrating birds. Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary is strictly closed to the public during peak bird nesting season.

In 2017, storms and natural erosion caused this nesting habitat to nearly disappear. Since restoration efforts began in 2021, Crab Bank has hosted thousands of new nests.

Today, the island still provides a critical nesting and roosting habitat for brown pelicans, black skimmers, American oystercatchers, and a variety of terns and gulls.

Experience Crab Bank up close during the summer with Coastal Expeditions on the Crab Bank Cruises!

The Mount Pleasant Seafood Trail is your new guide to restaurants helping keep the connection to the water on the table, with wild-caught fish, shrimp, oysters, crab, and other South Atlantic seafood.

๐ŸŽฃ What stops are on the Seafood Trail?
Participating restaurants have taken our Source Local Pledge, meaning they offer at least one regularly or seasonally available seafood menu item that is wild-caught and harvested from South Atlantic waters, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. When available, South Carolina-harvested seafood remains the closest and most distinctly local choice.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Hog Island Trail & Observation Deck

This easy, family-friendly trail offers incredible views of the Charleston Harbor and historic downtown Charleston. Itโ€™s one of the most picturesque walking trails in Mount Pleasant, perfect for nature watching, photography, or a relaxing stroll. Trail visitors can also take a short ramp and steps to the observation deck for panoramic views of Charleston Harbor.

Hog Island also has history! This island and the surrounding marshlands near Charleston Harbor played a strategic role during the Revolutionary War due to their proximity to key waterways connecting Mount Pleasant, Sullivanโ€™s Island, and Charleston. During the colonial era, these coastal areas were used for navigation, troop movement, and harbor defense activities as American forces worked to protect the region from British advances.

๐Ÿ“ The entrance to Hog Island Trail is on Patriots Point Road, across from the golf course parking lot.
