Save Union Block

Save Union Block Owned by Main Street Mount Pleasant (HISTORY) The Union Block Building was constructed in 1861 by William McCandless. Penn, dry goods merchant.

The building was commissioned by Henry Ambler, local attorney, and E.L. The third floor main hall, called the Opera House or Union Hall, and in the 1870s and 1880s, it provided a platform for many nationally-known speakers. In 1869, the third floor of the Union Block Building was the scene of a nationally historic event. Belle Babb Mansfield was tested and awarded a license to practice law, becoming the first woman in the United States to accomplish this.

The Community Pride video contest allows a local community the chance to win a one-of-a-kind mural designed and installed by Iowa artist Ben Schuh that welcomes visitors to their shopping district or downtown area. Partners in Preservation returns to Main Street as we spotlight 20 sites rich in women's history. Vote daily through October 29 for the Main Street you want to see receive a share of $2 million in preservation funding provided by American Express.

Help us win the in-person voting for the Union Block. The town that has the most in-person votes will win an additional $50,000. Come to the party Thursday, October 17 from 5-7 pm to vote for the Union Block. We will have free appetizers, desserts, and cocktails. Plus live music that is sure to be the Bee's Knees. Costumes encouraged, but not required.
