Earlier this year, the 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment became the 1st of the 1118th Infantry... But the Soldiers know, appreciate and respect the history of the banners that hang from our Unit Colors:

4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment’s History and Lineage

With a lineage that can be traced to the mid-19th century, the 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment has a proud history of se

rvice which includes the War Between the States and both World Wars. The regiment’s lineage begins with Company E, “Johnson Rifles,” of the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. In January 1861, the First Regiment of the S.C. Volunteers was sent to fight in the War Between the States. The unit was reorganized and served in the Longstreet Corps., earning battle honors for Bull Run (First Manassas); Williamsburg; Seven Pines; Gaines Mills; Frazier’s Farm (Second Manassas); Sharpsburg; Fredericksburg; Gettysburg; Lookout Valley; Jamestown; Fort Harrison and Deep Bottom. In 1898, the battalion answered the call to serve in the Spanish-American War. It answered the call in August 1917 to serve in World War I, and again in the 1940s to fight in World War II. In 1974, the battalion became part of the 218th Heavy Separate Brigade. The battalion has stepped up to serve at home many times, aiding authorities in the wake of civil disturbances and natural disasters like Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, Soldiers from the 4-118th were mobilized in support of Operation Noble Eagle. Many Soldiers now in the 4th Battalion deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 218th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 to 2008. From October 2008 to October 2011, the battalion was the security force for America’s CBRNE Consequence Management Response Force, supporting the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. The 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment is comprised of Headquarters and Headquarters Company in Mullins; A Co. in North Charleston; C Co. in Mount Pleasant; D Co. in Marion and 1118th Forward Support Company in Jedburg.

Soldiers of the 1-118th IN BN SCARNG deployed to the National Capital Regional to provide assistance to local law enforcement with crowd control, general security, public safety and infrastructure protection. The BN also helped create an environment where fellow citizens felt safe exercising their right to protest and have their message heard.

The 1-118thIN BN has a proud history of service to its nation in war and peace time. The BN has 6 Medal of Honor recipients from WWI and has been there to support the citizens of SC through Ice storms, floods and especially Hurricanes.
