We at MPW want all of our neighbors to be prepared the case of a storm. We will continue to share tips throughout the season, but here are a few to get you started.

1) Set aside water for each member of your family (don’t forget pets!) for a minimum of 3 days.
2) Know where your main shut off valve is in case you experience a leak or need to evacuate and want to shut off the water before leaving town.
3) If you haven’t already, create a WaterSmart profile to ensure that we can reach you in case of emergency. Even during non-hurricane season, WaterSmart is an amazing resource that helps you keep track of your water usage and get notified in case of unusual water usage, like a leak!

Stay tuned for more storm tips this season from Mount Pleasant Waterworks!

Meet another one of our hardworking employees: Rotifers!

Rotifers are the “heavyweights” of the microscopic wastewater world. These multi-celled organisms act as our final cleaning crew, using a rotating crown of cilia to vacuum up bacteria and tiny particles that other microbes might miss. By “polishing” the water of remaining cloudy particles, they ensure the final product is clear and safe before it returns to the environment.

Stay tuned to meant the other microscopic water heroes that help purify our wastewater! 💧

It’s National Public Works Week, and we’re taking time to celebrate all of the hardworking men and women that work tirelessly to ensure things run smoothly at MPW and throughout our extensive infrastructure!

Much of their work happens behind the scenes maintaining our pipes and setting up new services, and these folks deserve ample praise and recognition for their hard work and dedication!

Happy National Public Works Week!

Rooted in service, powered by community. Happy Public Works Week, Mount Pleasant!

Every year, we take a week to celebrate all of the service men and women who help keep things moving in our beautiful town.

While some are more visible, like repairing water towers or checking pipes, many components of our service workers' day-to-day work happen behind the scenes.

We're so grateful for all of their hard work. Let's thank a service worker this week!

When poured down the drain, kitchen fats, oils, and greases (FOGs) can clog pipes and form blockages that impact our wastewater collection and treatment system and pose a risk to public health and waterways.

Help protect the sewer system, your home, and our community by safely disposing of FOGs in the trash can. Never pour FOGs down the drain - even if you have a garbage disposal!

Did you know this is how septic systems work?

More than 1,400 homes in Mount Pleasant rely on septic
tanks, many in older neighborhoods built before
wastewater infrastructure was installed. However, rising
groundwater tables and frequent flooding increase the risk of septic system failure, which can allow harmful bacteria to enter local waterways like Shem Creek.

For properties without sewer access, MPW provides a $15-per-month plan for residential homeowners. The program includes annual inspections, five-year tank pump-outs and optional repair coverage.
