July Call Recap!

Your South Shore Fire Department responded to 573 calls for service in July, averaging about 18.5 calls per day!

While our crews stayed busy responding to calls, our members also continued sharpening their skills through multiple department-wide training sessions covering engine operations, confined space, and EMS.

To top it off, 7 of our members traveled to Aurora, Illinois, for a week of additional training at the Firemanship Conference.

Your South Shore firefighters are staying busy this summer. But no matter how busy things get, we remain ready to serve you when you need us!

This past week, seven members of your South Shore Fire Department attended the Firemanship Conference in Aurora, Illinois, where they joined over 1,000 other firefighters from across the country (even Canada and Mexico!) to learn from some of the American fire service’s most respected instructors.

Throughout the week, our members attended classroom lectures and participated in hands-on training focused on the latest techniques and best practices in fire attack, search, vehicle extrication, and machinery rescue.

Training never stops for our firefighters. The knowledge and skills gained at conferences like this are brought back to South Shore, where they are shared with the rest of the department ensuring we continue to provide the highest level of service to the communities we proudly protect.

We’re committed to continuous learning because when we invest in our firefighters, we invest in your safety.

This week, members of the South Shore Fire Department participated in a valuable three-day fire sprinkler training program provided by the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA).

Our firefighters thoroughly enjoyed the training and gained knowledge that will enhance their ability to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving fire sprinkler systems. The information and hands-on experience received will be directly applicable in the field and help us better serve our community.

A sincere thank you to NFSA for sharing their expertise and investing in the continued education of our personnel. We appreciate the partnership and commitment to firefighter training and safety.

Unless you have been avoiding windows today, you have probably noticed the smoky skies.

The haze and smoky smell across our area are NOT from a local fire. The smoke is drifting into Wisconsin from large wildfires burning in Canada, carried here by current weather patterns.

While the haze may look alarming, there is no local fire causing these conditions. As always, if you see smoke that appears to be coming from a specific location or observe an active fire, please call 911.

After 23 years with the South Shore Fire Department, and 32 years total in the fire service, Battalion Chief Michael Wienke has officially retired.

Yesterday, family, friends, retirees, and members of the South Shore Fire Department gathered at Station 8 to honor Chief Wienke’s remarkable career and recognize his years of service, leadership, and mentorship.

As the ceremony concluded, Chief Wienke participated in the South Shore tradition of the final bell ceremony, ringing the bell three times to mark the end of an accomplished career and the beginning of a well-deserved new chapter.

Congratulations, Chief! Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our department and the communities you’ve served. Wishing you all the best in your retirement!

Summer got off to a busy start for your South Shore Fire Department!

During the month of June, our crews responded to 549 calls for service, bringing our total to 3,235 calls through the first six months of the year.

June also marked the start of an exciting new chapter as our three newest firefighters joined their assigned shifts. They’ve hit the ground running, and we’re excited to have them serving our community.

Whatever the nature of an emergency may be, your South Shore Fire Department is ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The real horror story? Turning a fun Fourth of July into an avoidable emergency.

As a reminder as the holiday approaches, Village Ordinance 54-2 prohibits the use of fireworks in the Village of Mount Pleasant. We know, we know. We sound like party poopers. While you're celebrating this Independence Day, please use good judgment, put safety first, and help protect your family, your neighbors, and our community.

⚠️ Extreme Heat is Expected This Week ⚠️

Please use caution this upcoming week as our area is under an Extreme Heat Watch, with the potential to be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning.

Forecasted high temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values that could exceed 105°F. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, so start hydrating now and take steps to protect yourself and those around you.

Heat Safety Tips:

💧 Drink plenty of water. Avoid excessive caffeine, sugary drinks, and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
☀️ Limit time outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the day.
🌳 If you must work or exercise outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle—even for a few minutes.
❤️ Check on elderly family members, friends, neighbors, and anyone without air conditioning to make sure they’re staying cool and hydrated.

This training prop allows firefighters to simulate supplying and supplementing a building’s fire sprinkler system by pumping water into the system during emergency operations. Hands-on training with equipment like this helps our crews build proficiency and preparedness for real-world incidents.
