From TxGenWeb Project:

Evergreen is an old, abandoned and almost lost African-American cemetery located in far Northeast Titus County about 15 miles East of Talco on FM Highway 71 about one mile from the Morris County line. Without proper maintenance, it will soon be lost. It lies in the forks of County Road NE 48 (CR 3925) and the highway. Logans, Prices and other families are buried in this cemetery. There are at least thirteen unmarked graves visible. Eight native stones remain to mark some of the graves. One of these stones has the initials D.A.W. & E.G.W. scratched into them. There is only one monument in the cemetery for: Price, Mose born: March 3, 1853 died: March 12, 1920.

To reach the Evergreen Cemetery from the Titus County courthouse take Jeffers on Street north for 1.4 miles to the intersection of Burton Road (IH 30 southern access road) and turn right (East) onto Burton Road. The Harts Bluff Road (FM 1402) will intersect after 0.5 miles. Turn left (North) onto FM 1402 and proceed 12.4 miles to the intersection of FM 71. Turn right (East onto FM 71 and proceed 6.6 miles to the intersection from the left of CR 48 (CR 3925) Turn left onto CR 3925. The cemetery will lie on left about 0.1 mile.

The Evergreen Cemetery is undergoing its 2nd Reclamation, today, June 10th a few hardworking souls, all volunteers, took on the underbrush in a flurry, all the while, talking about the families and ancestors back to the time of this cemetery's first interments. Following is a letter of appreciation to the Estrella Ranch for their tremendous help in the initial reclamation in 2011.
The series of photos below this posting are from this mornings work crew, headed up by Mr. Leonard Rockwell.... Thank you Sir. TCHC Merit Award Marker to be placed at the Cemetery.
Leonard, please post a list of all your volunteers, they were doing a great job before the storm blew in...

TITUS COUNTY HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY

EVERGREEN CEMETERY

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Let it be known, that the Titus County Historical Commission, the Titus County Historical Preservation Society and their Directors, Officers, Boards and Members do hereby acknowledge, commend and recognize the efforts of the Estrello Ranch and Cattle Company. The owners, supervisors and employees of this group have shown an interest in the community and the preservation of the heritage of the area by reclaiming the Evergreen Cemetery.
Evergreen Cemetery is a small African-American cemetery in the northeastern corner of Titus County, near the junction of FM 71 and CR 3925. The overgrown and unkept state of the cemetery had been previously documented. The only monument headstone present is marked “Mose Price”, other markers are inscribed with initials, a few natural stones and other unmarked graves are evident. Lost graves are yet undetermined.
Thanks to the work of Estrello employees, replacing fencing, clearing underbrush and cooperating with the county, the community now has an opportunity to enjoy the history of this cemetery and to be active in its continued recovery.

ON BEHALF OF THE CITIZENS OF TITUS COUNTY, TCHC,TCHPS AND THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY AND DESCENDANTS OF EVERGREEN CEMETERY; …. THANK YOU …..
