Today started off like any other day for Larry, one of our weekly volunteers.
He headed out on his usual Monday delivery route, making visits to the homebound recipients he sees each week. But when he arrived to deliver meals to Peter, one of the recipients he visits regularly, he quickly noticed that something seemed off.
Peter assured Larry that he was fine. But as Larry turned to leave, he heard a thump on the other side of the door.
Peter had fallen.
Larry alerted us to the situation and called 911 for assistance. He stayed with Peter until help arrived while we contacted Peter’s emergency contact, letting them know what had happened so they could head straight to his home to check on him.
Stories like this remind us that Meals on Wheels is about so much more than food. For many of our homebound recipients, a volunteer’s visit is also a wellness check, a friendly face, and a vital connection to the community.
If Larry had not been there today, Peter may have been left on the floor until someone happened to check on him.
A meal was delivered today, but so was something even more important: help when it was needed most.
Thank you, Larry, for showing up week after week and paying attention to our neighbors. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment to this community mean more than words can express. ❤️
