At WIC, we know that screen time and digital devices are a big concern for families. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently updated its recommended guidelines on digital media to prevent potentially harmful effects on your family's health, safety, and well-being! The AAP suggests several recommendations to support your family’s healthy use of technology:

• Create a family technology plan and set boundaries on digital media.
• Delay use of personal tablets.
• Watch and play alongside your children to monitor digital content.
• Use parental controls.

Check out the full article from the AAP, which provides even more recommendations and resources, such as a “Phone Ready questionnaire” and sample conversation starters about media: www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/helping-kids-thrive-in-a-digital-world-AAP-policy-explained.aspx

MDHHS recommends that Michigan households use a certified lead-reducing drinking water filter if your home has or if you are uncertain if it has one of the following:
• Lead or galvanized plumbing.
• A lead service line carrying water from the street to their residence.
• Old faucets and fittings that were sold before 2014.

The Statewide Filter Support Program offers eligible households a free certified lead-reducing drinking water filter and replacement cartridges. A household may be eligible for the water filter if they have a child under 19 or a pregnant Medicaid enrollee lives there, and the home has — or may have — lead plumbing, such as:
• Lead or galvanized plumbing.
• A lead service line connecting the home to the street.
• Faucets or fittings sold before 2014.

Learn more and apply for the program at https://www.michigan.gov/mileadsafe/get-ahead-of-lead/the-statewide-filter-support-program.

CMDHD is monitoring public beaches again this summer.

Each week during the swimming season, we test water at public bathing beaches in Arenac, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, Osceola, and Roscommon Counties. We check for high levels of E. coli bacteria and harmful algal blooms (HABs).

If the water isn’t safe, we post a warning sign at the beach and update the results online. This is our 25th year monitoring public beaches, and our 10th year partnering with the Midland County Health Department to monitor select Midland beaches.

Check the latest beach conditions before you go: https://mienviro.michigan.gov/explorer/beach/map/results.
