**Happening Today**

CMDHD is offering a Flu Shot Walk-in Clinic at Saganing Tribal Center (5447 Sturman Rd., Standish) on Thursday, October 22 from 9am – 5pm.

Getting your flu shot is one simple step you can take to protect your own health and help keep loved ones healthy, too. It is especially important to protect those who are more likely to become seriously ill from flu, including young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with certain health conditions.

Flu shot facts:
• The flu shot will not give you the flu.
• Even if you get the flu after vaccination, the flu shot can help make your illness less severe.
• Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot each season, if they can.

Additional Flu Shot Walk-in Clinic will be offered at Saganing Tribal Center on Monday, 11/9.

Press Release: CMDHD Promoting Lead Poisoning Prevention Week: October 25–31

Central Michigan District Health Department (CMDHD) is promoting Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 25–31, reminding families that lead exposure is preventable. This year’s theme, “Keep Kids Safe from Lead,” focuses on three actions: get the facts, get children tested, and get homes tested for lead hazards.

Lead can harm a child’s brain and nervous system. Even low levels of lead in a child’s blood can affect learning, attention, behavior, growth, hearing, and speech. Young children are at the greatest risk because their bodies and brains are still developing, and they are more likely to put their hands and objects in their mouths. There is no known safe level of lead in a child’s blood.

Michigan now requires blood lead testing for all children at 12 and 24 months of age. Children must also be tested at other ages when certain risk factors are present.

Isabella Substance Awareness Coalition - ISAC is hosting a Medication Take-Back Event at CMDHD's Mt. Pleasant office (2012 E. Preston, door B) on Tuesday, October 20 from 8am - noon.

Proper disposal helps to prevent drug misuse, accidental poisoning, and overdose by safely removing unused medications from your home. It also protects the environment from water contamination caused by improper disposal methods like flushing or trashing medications.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that reduces your chances of getting HIV from injection drug use or s*x. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV, reduces the risk of getting HIV from injection drug use by up to 74% and reduces the risk of getting HIV from s*x by about 99%. PrEP is available in pills (Truvada or Descovy) or injections (Apretude).

Who is Eligible? You qualify if you test HIV negative and you: are an IV drug user or have unprotected vaginal or a**l s*x with a partner of unknown HIV status or have a partner who is living with HIV (especially if partner's HIV viral load is detectable or unknown) or had a recent STI.

What’s the Process? We will test for HIV, STIs, hepatitis B and C, and check your metabolic panel. We will follow up in 30 days to see how you are doing. After that, you’ll have HIV testing every 3 months and STI testing every 6 months. PrEP reaches full protection in about 7 to 21 days, depending on injection drug use and s*xual activity. PrEP is safe, but some people have short-term side effects such as nausea, headache, or fatigue.
