Each August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) brings a global community together to take action on overdose. 2026’s IOAD theme of “25 years on. Still needed.” celebrates 25 years of honoring lives lost to overdose while recognizing that prevention, compassion, and connection remain just as important today.

In 2024, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yielded an estimate of 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States, a decrease of 26.9 percent from the 110,037 deaths in 2023. This is the lowest number of projected deaths since 2019.

Almost all states in the U.S. experienced decreases in total overdoses in 2024, with only South Dakota and Nevada registering small increases compared to 2023. Overdose deaths from opioids – mainly fentanyl – decreased in 2024, but they still account for almost 68 percent of all overdose fatalities.

**Ross Lake Contamination Advisory**

Ross Lake has tested high for E. coli and is under a contamination advisory. Full body contact with the water is not recommended, due to high bacteria levels.

Ross Lake results today are 360.9 E. coli per 100mL. Advisory threshold is 300 E. coli per 100mL. Northern Sites Campground tested just below advisory level, at 261.3, and yesterday's advisory at this location has lifted. These results and others can be found at EGLE’s BeachGuard website at http://www.egle.state.mi.us/beach.

Rain is in the forecast for this weekend. Because rainwater washes waste from birds and other animals into the river system, contamination levels will likely rise during and right after rainfall. For this reason, it is recommended to avoid body contact with recreational water for up to 48 hours after it rains, even if there is not an advisory posted.

Why does CMDHD only test the water for E. coli? E. coli testing is the fastest way to see that waste has contaminated the water. While E. coli itself can make you sick, its presence acts as a warning sign that other dangerous germs -- like viruses and parasites -- are hiding in the water too. Testing for E. coli allows us to quickly alert residents that the water is contaminated, without waiting for test results for all the specific germs that might be in the water with E. coli. CMDHD is partnering with Clare Gladwin Prevention Coalition , Ten16 Recovery Network and Mid-State Health Network to host a Medication Takeback event on Tuesday, September 8, from 10am - 3pm at our Harrison Office (815 N. Clare Avenue).

Stop by to dispose of your unused, expired, and unwanted medications safely. Disposing of unwanted medications through this event helps to prevent medication misuse and potential opioid addiction.

Note: We will not accept liquid medications, sharps, or inhalers.

Water downstream of Gladwin City Park has tested high for E. coli and is under a contamination advisory. Full body contact with the water is not recommended, due to high bacteria levels.

300 E. coli per 100mL is the advisory threshold. Current results are 365 E. coli per 100mL. Water quality will be retested later today, with results posted tomorrow.
