Summer heat isn’t just uncomfortable for us—it’s tough on roads too. ☀️🚧

As temperatures rise, asphalt can soften and become more flexible, which makes it more vulnerable to wear from heavy traffic. That’s also why you might notice roads expanding slightly during hot days. Expansion joints are built into pavement and structures to give materials room to move without cracking or buckling.

This natural “breathing room” helps prevent bigger damage, but extreme heat and constant traffic can still take a toll over time—which is why summer is one of the busiest seasons for road maintenance and repairs.

We’re out there working to keep things safe, smooth, and reliable all season long. Thanks for slowing down in work zones and helping us protect the roads we all use. 🚧💛

As mowing season ramps up in May, please remember to keep grass clippings out of streets and storm drains.

Grass clippings can wash into storm drains during rain events, where they may block drainage and contribute to localized flooding. They can also impact nearby waterways and water quality.

After mowing, simply sweep or blow clippings back onto your lawn. This helps keep our stormwater system working properly and supports a cleaner, safer community.

Small actions make a big difference in keeping Mount Prospect running smoothly this spring. 🌱💧

Spring is a busy time for tree maintenance! 🌳

Tree trimming helps remove damaged branches, improve visibility, and keep sidewalks and roadways clear.
It also promotes healthier, stronger trees for years to come.

You may see our crews working throughout the community this season as part of routine maintenance.

🚜 Machine of the Month: Sidewalk Sweeper

Keeping our sidewalks clean and safe is no small task — and our sidewalk sweeper helps get the job done.

This machine removes dirt, sand, salt, and debris left behind from winter and everyday use. Regular sidewalk sweeping helps improve pedestrian safety, prevent debris from entering storm drains, and keep our community looking its best.

You may see this machine working throughout town as part of our ongoing maintenance efforts. It’s just one of the many ways Public Works keeps Mount Prospect clean, safe, and moving.

We’re proud to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Gateway Plaza ✂️✨ at 310 W. Northwest Highway — a transformed site that now serves as a welcoming new entrance to our downtown.

Once home to decades of industrial and automotive use, this property has been thoughtfully redeveloped into a vibrant, sustainable public space featuring native plantings, pedestrian walkways, and a striking clocktower centerpiece. This project reflects our commitment to smart reinvestment, environmental stewardship, and creating spaces that enhance our community’s identity 🏙️

The Village is developing a long-term Stormwater Management Master Plan to help guide future flood mitigation projects and policies.

This plan will identify problem areas, evaluate solutions, and support long-term improvements to reduce flooding impacts in our community.

We want to hear from residents as part of this process — your input matters.

Keeping Mount Prospect safe and walkable is a priority. 🚶‍♀️

Sidewalk grinding helps smooth uneven sidewalks caused by tree roots and natural shifting. This maintenance reduces trip hazards and improves accessibility throughout the community.

You may see Public Works crews performing sidewalk grinding in various neighborhoods this season as part of ongoing maintenance efforts.
