Special request for Mount Rainier Elementary and Thomas S. Stone PTO families who have participated in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day events over the past few years: we need some additional public support in Annapolis to get our SB526 Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day bill through the Senate.

Delegate Diana Fennell's bill has passed the House Ways and Means Committee and we're on our way to passage but last year the bill stalled in the Senate. Senator Alonzo Washington from District 22 is our primary Senate sponsor this year and our committee hearing is this Wednesday. That means written testimony is due on Monday between 8 AM and 6 PM.

Every year that we do this event in our local schools, we hear so many heartwarming stories about children who came home talking about Ruby, students who want to learn more about her, kids who create their own artwork to help tell her story, and so much else. We need Annapolis to hear that positive impact, and the ways that events like Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day help raise awareness of school pedestrian safety and how much our community cares about a safer streets.

If you have never submitted written testimony in Annapolis before, Timothy Meyer, Education Advocate is happy to help walk you through it (but please ask by Monday morning before Blueprint Day activities take over). A sample testimony template is included but please share as many of your own stories and perspectives as possible.

And if you're not a parent but still want to see Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day get passed, please take a few minutes to submit your testimony too!

Don't miss your opportunity to submit testimony and tell the Senate Education, Energy, and the Environment Committee to give SB526 a favorable report and send Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day to the full Senate.

Share all the reasons why you support Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day but make sure you submit your testimony on Monday, March 2 between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on the MyMGA website. https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/MyMGATracking/WitnessSignup

Never submitted Annapolis testimony before? Send us a message or email [email protected] for help.

And you can use this sample testimony template to get started:

Tell the Senate to pass SB526 - Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

for a terrific day in Annapolis advocating for HB486 - Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day and Maryland School Pedestrian Awareness Day.

Thank you to Delegate Diana Fennell, Kori Johnson from Safe Routes Partnership and Mayor Celina Benitez from the City of Mount Rainier for joining us to honor Ruby Bridges and advocate for safer routes to school for all Maryland students. It was especially inspiring to hear testimony from a middle school SGA president from Baltimore City - reminding us that students are always the most important part of education.

(And as a bonus, it was an honor to meet with several PGCPS Community School Coordinators and advocates from around the state at We Love Community Schools Day!)

to host our 3rd annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day celebration at Mount Rainier Elementary on November 14, which was the 65th anniversary of Ruby's historic walk to school. We are especially grateful to our City of Mount Rainier neighbors at Thomas S. Stone PTO who have also been PGCPS leaders honoring Ruby Bridges and celebrating this event.

The single most rewarding part of Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day: being able to hear the observations from students and speak to them about the lessons Ruby Bridges continues to teach us today. Our future generations are full of wisdom and kind hearts - and events like this remind us that with them as our leaders we're all going to be OK.

Thank you to every student and family who participated, to our MRES administration, teachers and staff who make events like this possible, and to everyone throughout PGCPS who supported Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. We look forward to continuing to grow this movement in Prince George's County and throughout Maryland.
