Early this morning we responded to a reported vegetation fire in city limits. Thanks to the quick response of Mt Shasta Police Department, CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit, and bystanders, the fire was quickly contained and kept to 20’x20’. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but it is believed that this is the result of an unattended and unsafe campfire from a transient. We would like to remind everyone of the dangers of unsafe campfires and how, especially in these conditions, they can become quickly out of control.

We had a wonderful time yesterday celebrating 250 years of independence, complete with chauffeuring the Grand Marshal for the parade and the Citizens of the Year. A huge thank you to everyone who came and bought t-shirts and donated to our association.

Over the past few months, we've been busy working on fuel reduction on the south end of the city. Thanks to the Wildfire Mitigation Grant provided by CAL FIRE we are able to utilize both heavy equipment and hand tools to help create fuels breaks and reduce fuel loading in city limits, ultimately making our community safer.

Last Wednesday training consisted of swift water rescue and victim recovery. As an all-risk department, it’s our job to be ready for any emergency those we serve could have. Thank you also to the Mt. Shasta Volunteer Firemen’s Association for the purchase of much of this speciality gear.

Over the last few days your Mt. Shasta Fire Department has been hard at work training on structure fire response and operations. Although we are in wildfire season, structure fires remain a very real reality for us and the communities we serve. We encourage all citizens to remain fire safe and to not neglect the importance of fire safety; both in the home and outside of it.

Yesterday evening Mt. Shasta Fire responded to a commercial vehicle fire at Mott Road. Thanks to the help of Castella Fire Protection District, Dunsmuir Fire, CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit, CHP - Mount Shasta, CalTrans, and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was extinguished and no injuries occurred. It’s teamwork and coordination between departments and agencies like this that make our job possible, especially in small communities like ours.
