First day of school in Mount Shasta means:

Traffic exists again (aka the dreaded parent train). Someone is absolutely running late and every kid has grown approximately six inches over the summer.

Just a friendly reminder watch those crosswalks, actually stop at the stop signs, and slowwww down. The speed limit is not a suggestion just because you’re late for drop-off.

Happy first day, Mount Shasta! Let’s keep all our tiny humans safe.

Verbal Altercation Leads to Pursuit

On July 26, 2026, at approximately 1400 hours, a Mt. Shasta Police Officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Bear Springs Road and S. Mt. Shasta Boulevard when the officer observed two vehicles involved in what appeared to be a verbal altercation. As the officer attempted to ascertain the situation, the female driver intentionally rammed the male victim's vehicle before continuing northbound on S. Mt. Shasta Boulevard.

The officer initiated a vehicle pursuit after observing the female driver traveling at excessive speeds and driving into opposing traffic, putting pedestrians and other motorists at risk.

The pursuit continued to the area of S. Mt. Shasta Boulevard and McCloud Avenue, where the officer attempted a lawful intervention tactic in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The pursuit continued to the area of N. Washington Avenue and McCloud Avenue, where the driver failed to stop for posted stop signs and continued driving with wanton disregard for the safety of others.

North of Upton Way, a second lawful intervention tactic was successfully deployed, bringing the pursuit to a safe conclusion.

The driver was identified as 58-year-old Melanie Charlotte Soletti and was placed under arrest without further incident. Soletti was booked into the Siskiyou County Jail for Felony Evading a Peace Officer and Leaving the Scene of a Collision Involving Property.

The incident remains under investigation, and additional charges are being pursued.
