RASAR Rockingham-Augusta Search & Rescue is a non-profit, all-volunteer team that assists law enforcement and VDEM with ground search & rescue.

ROCKINGHAM-AUGUSTA SEARCH & RESCUE is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to assisting local law enforcement and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management with search and rescue operations. We work primarily on missing and lost person searches, but can also be called to assist with downed aircraft searches, evidence recovery and rescue operations. We are often called to serve the most vu

lnerable members of our community, including children, adults with mental health issues and the elderly. We search for both live and presumed dead subjects. Our team focuses its services on the Rockingham/Augusta area, but we are trained and prepared to respond to resource needs throughout Virginia. We are committed to educating the public, especially youth and law enforcement/rescue organizations, about what we do and how to be prepared for wilderness survival.

RASAR members hit the trail this afternoon for a conditioning hike, gear test, and navigation refresher. The North River trail was beautiful and provided us an opportunity to discuss river crossing technique, practice using our map-reading and compass skills, and review our radio/communication protocols. We might have talked just a bit about trout fishing, too! What a great day to enjoy the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley!

RASAR members spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon introducing themselves to the team's brand new rescue gear. Our new rescue basket, wheel and medical kit will make us even more effective in the field. We are thrilled with our upgrades and looking forward to using the equipment in additional field training and on searches. Many, many thanks to the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge for supporting our team and making this much-needed equipment upgrade a reality!

One of the best things about being part of a search and rescue team is training together in our beautiful wilderness areas. This weekend, RASAR members took to the woods to practice navigation skills, terrain negotiation (it's steep around here!), and emergency shelter construction. All of these skills are necessary to be effective in the field. We were rewarded with warm sun, cool breezes, and fall colors just starting to peak. Who could ask for more?

One of the most useful--and most perishable--skills in search and rescue is land navigation. Search team members carry a compass and a GPS unit to assist with off-trail navigation and route mapping. It is essential to practice navigation skills, and that is what RASAR members did on Saturday. For this training, we focused on how to most effectively use a GPS unit for finding a search area starting point and mapping a search area. We finished up our time with a clue-awareness exercise designed to make us more adept at spotting possible clues during a search operation.
