***For Immediate Release***
On Friday May 29th, 2026, Mount Union Officers observed Nathaniel D Fortson Jr age 54 operating a vehicle and driving around the Mount Union area. Throughout the afternoon hours, Officers observed Fortson to be following and circling officers while out on patrol. Officers were aware that Fortson was on a limited ignition interlock license from previous DUI cases. Officers observed Fortson pull into the Wine and Spirits Store located on West Water Street. Officers then pulled into the Wine and Spirits Store and attempted to confirm if the vehicle had an installed interlock system in his vehicle by plain view.
At that time, Fortson came out of the store and immediately became aggressive towards officers. Fortson aggressively approached officers creating a safety concern as Fortson was extremely close to the officers. Officers gave Fortson verbal commands to calm down and step back. Fortson did not comply with those commands and continued to act aggressively. Officers then attempted to use minimal physical force to create a safe distance between officers and Fortson. Fortson fought those actions and began shoving the officers. Officers then drew their less lethal Tasers and again gave Fortson verbal commands. Fortson continued to be non-compliant and officers deployed their Tasers until Fortson was placed under arrest.
Fortson has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction, Disorderly Conduct, and operating a vehicle without ignition interlock.
