๐Ÿšธ Putting pedestrian safety first.

Following an initial meeting in May, City staff met with DSS staff to discuss ongoing pedestrian safety concerns near their building. Since then, the City has repainted the crosswalk, installed a pedestrian yield sign, and increased traffic enforcement.

While these improvements are making a difference, speeding remains a concern. Additional measures include plans to paint โ€œSlow Downโ€ on 1st Street between Union and 1st Avenue and replace a damaged sign.

Through continued community engagement, collaboration, and proactive safety measures, the City remains committed to listening to residents, addressing concerns, and improving pedestrian safety. All of these efforts are part of a larger commitment to making our streets safer and creating a safer Mount Vernon for everyone.

Please be advised that Mount Vernon City Hall will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, in observance of Columbus Day. City Hall will reopen on Tuesday, October 13 at 8:30 AM.

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Sanitation collections will follow a modified holiday schedule throughout the week. Please review the flyer for the full collection schedule for the North and South Sides.

๐Ÿš— Parking Reminder: Alternate side of the street parking will be suspended on Monday, October 12. Business-area meter rules will remain in effect.

Since its establishment in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge, Fire Prevention Week has become the longest-running public health observance in the United States.๏ฟฝ

Here in Mount Vernon, fire safety is a year-round priority. Throughout the week, the Mount Vernon Fire Department will be sharing important fire prevention tips, cooking safety videos, and helpful information to keep you and your loved ones prepared.๏ฟฝ
