Regarding Fraudulent Emails and Invoices Impersonating the City of Mount Vernon
"The City of Mount Vernon has experienced an increase in fraudulent emails and invoices sent by individuals posing as municipal employees or departments.
According to information shared by state and federal authorities, scammers are targeting residents, businesses, and vendors by sending fake invoices that appear to come from local government offices. These emails often use addresses that look legitimate and may include the name of a city employee, the municipality, or references to government agencies. In some cases, the invoices contain logos, images, and information copied from municipal websites to appear authentic.
The scammers are believed to be obtaining contact information from publicly available records, including planning, zoning, and other local government documents. They then send customized invoices requesting payment for permits, applications, or other municipal-related services.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and New York State authorities have issued warnings about this ongoing scam, which has affected municipalities both in New York and across the country.
Residents, businesses, and vendors are encouraged to carefully verify any invoice or payment request they receive that appears to come from the City. If there is any uncertainty regarding a bill, permit fee, or payment request, individuals should contact the appropriate City department directly using official contact information listed on the City's website before submitting payment.
