See those footprints? They are less than 18" from the edge. This photo was shared with us by the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, who really wants you to know that a cornice (giant, overhanging mass of snow) forms every year at the summit and can release at any time, plunging into the crater. Stay well back from the edge and DO NOT trust tracks already present. The advice is also good for pretty much anywhere when you're snowshoeing or hiking in snow in rough terrain, not just on the mountain. Snow can be VERY deceiving. Our agency helps respond to search & rescue missions. Please don't be on the other end of those calls needing help.
