Big Lake Fire Department

Big Lake Fire Department The Big Lake Fire Department is a small rural department located in Skagit County, Washington The box would get clogged up with leaves etc.

Big Lake fire department was started in approximately 1949 Primarily by Thor Nersten. There were many meetings to get it up and going, with Lyle Robbins and Bill Kromeomen, two of the main contributors. The original 2 bay block building, which is part of the existing building, was built by Ralph and Norm Lindbloom. The building had a small kitchen in the corner with a serving window out to the mee

ting room. After a few trials a wood stove was used for heat and water was supplied from a spring up on the hill behind the hall. The spring had a wooden box in it with a pipe going down to the hall. and had to be cleaned out every so often. A water heater was installed and the hall was ready to use. The first fire truck was a 39 Chevrolet that was purchased from Burlington fire.It was not complete and was taken to Herman Young in Montbourne to finish. Herman with the help of the firefighters built a 450 gallon tank for it. The tank had an outlet to go to the pump but no inlet and had to be filled from the top. The truck had a front mount pump that was driven off of the front of the crankshaft. With no hydrants so the truck was either filled at the Montbourne water tank, with a Hose at the hall or with a hose off of the pump if they were drafting out of the lake or a creek. The water tank at Montbourne was above the big lake bar and grill at the top of the hill. It was a raised round wooden tank connected to the Montbourne water system. The parade truck that we have now is that very same truck.

🔥 Burn Ban Coming Soon — Be Safe! 🔥

The dry weather is here, humidity levels are low, and the risk for wildfire and brush fires is climbing across our region. Conditions can change quickly, and even a small spark can lead to a fast-moving fire.

🚫 A burn ban is coming soon. Please use extra caution with:
• Outdoor burning
• Fire pits and campfires
• BBQs and grills
• Equipment that can create sparks

Together, we can help prevent wildfires and keep our community safe. Stay alert, stay prepared, and watch for upcoming burn ban announcements. 🚒🌲

A modified burn ban for all residential and land-clearing fires in unincorporated Skagit County will go into effect on June 15, 2026, and continue until further notice. Skagit County will no longer issue permits for burn activities, and existing permits will be suspended.

More information on what is allowed during the burn ban can be found here: https://www.skagitcounty.net/Departments/Home/press/052126.htm

The Skagit County Fire Marshal's Office has decided to proactively have a “set date” to allow the public to know when to expect burn restrictions every year. In the past, we have not been able to provide much notice by waiting until the weather models, vegetation flammability, and fire potential have reached elevated risk levels.

The Skagit County Fire Marshal reviews the seasonal forecasts for drought, precipitation, relative humidity, and heat each year to assess our yearly fire risk. Skagit County is in a drought again this year and weather outlooks are predicting our region to be very dry and hot this summer. With these risks in mind, our fire chiefs and fire marshal believe it best to continue using a set date for the county burn ban.

As we get nearer to the summer and hot weather, our risk for wildfires rises.
Six of your Volunteer Firefighters completed their Red Card training to prepare. This is a 32 hour hands-on course.
Thanks to these six and all our volunteers for stepping up to take care of us by preparing for our emergencies!

🚗📵 April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month 📵🚗

Please stay off your phone and focus on the road.

You may be a great driver who stays attentive — but not everyone else is. Every day, we see drivers who are:
• On their phones
• Eating
• Applying makeup
• Searching for the “right song”
• Distracted by conversations with passengers

All it takes is a moment of distraction for a serious crash to occur.

👀 Stay alert. Stay focused. Stay safe.

Your attention behind the wheel could save a life — including your own.

Today we had the honor to celebrate the life of Gary Friend. Gary served as a Fire Commissioner for the Clear Lake Fire Department for 25 years and volunteered as a firefighter for 52 years. He spent many hours responding with and supporting the Big Lake Fire Department.

Thank you Clear Lake and Sedro-Woolley for attending and honoring Gary. Thank you Cedardale Fire (District 3) for covering our fire district so we could attend!
