It is the central library for Westchester County, New York. The collection consists of some 490,000 catalogued books, 21,000 serials, 17,000 audio and visual recordings and 158,000 other material holdings (including government documents). The building houses a Cybercorner, Computer Lab, Literacy Center, Adult Collection, Young Adult Collection, Childrens Department, Periodicals Department, Mills L
aw Collection, Job Information Center, Multicultual Reference Collection, Local History Collection and Government Documents Collection. There are also two full floors of mezzanine where old and rare materials are kept. The library has event spaces and galleries. There is currently the Trustees Room, Grace Greene Baker Community Room, and Rotunda Gallery where events happen. There is also a bimonthly calendar of events listing events and programs that happen in the library. In addition, the libray offers laptops and ereaders for in house use, wireless access, and study rooms in the rotunda gallery. The library receives support from both Friends of the Mount Vernon Public Library and the Mount Vernon Public Library Foundation. The primary mission of the Mount Vernon Public Library shall be to provide quality library service to the residents of Mount Vernon in an efficient manner, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Providing a suitable facility and trained staff necessary for acquiring, maintaining and providing access to a broadly based collection of books, periodicals, recordings and other materials, including those in new and evolving technological formats, in order to meet the educational, information, cultural and recreational needs of library patrons. The policies and methods for accomplishing this mission are separately defined elsewhere. As the designated Central Library of the Westchester Library System, to provide materials and information to the member libraries of the System, and their patrons under the terms of a "Plan of Service" reviewed annually.
