But per the latest data there were 13,820 home dryer fires occur each year on average in the U.S. resulting in 7 civilian deaths, 344 civilian injuries and $233 million in direct property damage annually. Carbon monoxide is often called the "silent killer" because it is colorless, odorless, and can become deadly in just minutes.

At the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, we're committed to helping keep our community safe through education and prevention. Knowing the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, installing working CO detectors, and maintaining your home's heating appliances can save lives.
