With warmer weather here, it’s a great time to get outside—whether you’re walking or biking. Please remember to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings!
Walking Safety Basics
• Use sidewalks when available – If there’s no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and stay as far from vehicles as possible.
• Cross at designated areas – Always use crosswalks or intersections—avoid crossing mid-block.
• Choose safe crossing spots – If no crosswalk is available, pick a well-lit area with a clear view of traffic. Wait for a safe gap and keep watching as you cross.
• Watch for vehicles in unexpected places – Be alert for cars entering/exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots.
• Stay alert while crossing – Pay attention to signals and the behavior of drivers, cyclists, and other pedestrians.
Biking Safety Basics
• Wear a helmet.
• Drive with the flow, in the same direction as traffic.
• Obey street signs, signals, and road markings, just like a car.
• Assume the other person doesn’t see you; look ahead for hazards or situations to avoid that may cause you to fall, like toys, pebbles, potholes, grates, train tracks.
Let’s all do our part to keep our roads and sidewalks safe this season!
