Skagit County Clean Water

Skagit County Clean Water This page is dedicated to sharing clean water information and encouraging good land stewardship. How big is YOUR footprint?

Skagit County has abundant resources along its marine shorelines that rely on clean water. One of the primary goals of Skagit County's Clean Water Program (CWP) is to ensure the waters are free of pollution. In recent years, areas around the county including the Samish and Padilla Bay basins have suffered severe f***l coliform pollution issues. Bacteria in our rivers, streams, and bays often reach

levels too high for safe shellfish harvest and recreation. In addition, farmers are worried about the water quality and the need to provide consumers the assurance that their food products are safe. We at Skagit County Clean Water are dedicated to finding and fixing sources of pollution, and encouraging landowners and homeowner to adopt practices that protect our water quality. Our many partners include Skagit County, the State Departments of Ecology, Health, and Agriculture, the Skagit Conservation District, the Skagit Conservation Education Alliance, the Samish Tribe, the Western Washington Agricultural Association, the Washington State Dairy Federation, EPA, and Taylor Shellfish, among others. To learn more, visit www.skagitcounty.net/csi. Our goal is to keep our local waterways clean by encouraging landowners and homeowners to adopt practices that protect water quality, and sharing local water quality information. Halee Sexton, who served as our intern for over a year, is now the Source Control Inspector for our Stormwater Program!

Halee grew up in the Edmonds area. While she has bounced around, she has always ended up coming home to the Pacific Northwest.

Halee worked in local government and ecotourism before taking off to Bocas del Toro, Panamá to be a Sustainable Agriculture Systems Peace Corps volunteer. After that, she spent a few years working for the Department of Labor.

Halee reoriented her career back towards environmental work by pursuing a second degree in Environmental Science.

She interned with the Natural Resources Division between classes. And now, we’re so excited to have her as a full-time employee!

Halee’s hobbies include looking at plants, cooking, sewing, and getting outside by hiking or biking! She lives with her cat, Astra.

Invasive weeds are popping up fast this spring—including the notorious poison hemlock!

You might have already guessed it from the name, but poison hemlock is deadly to both humans and animals. Now, while it's (mostly) small, is the best time to treat it! You can hand pull it, but make sure to wear gloves and throw out plant parts in a bag in the garbage.

This time of year, poison hemlock is typically growing close to the ground, like in the second picture here. Later in the season it will have small white flowers growing in umbrella-shaped clusters.

Between its white flowers and its feathery leaves, poison hemlock has several lookalikes. Luckily, its hairless, purple-spotted stems help set it apart.
