In 1947, an abnormally wet spring gave way to drought conditions that continued into the fall. By October 16, 20 separate forest fires were burning across Maine with the worst damage occurring in York County where several towns were leveled.

On October 21, a small fire on Mt Desert Island was exacerbated by a coastal gale. The fire raged across the center and east side of the island and eventually consumed more than 17,000 acres, including much of Bar Harbor. The “Great Fires” of 1947 burned more than 200,000 acres across Maine and consumed nearly 1,000 homes.

State photographer George French, whose photos are held at the Archives, captured the some of the destruction with his lens.
